I'm guessing that for most people, those two or three quarters worth felt awesome. That is a good point actually. I think just about anyone could get to the part where they take down the first ED-209, and beat it, using a couple of quarters. That'd be money well spent thirty years ago.

Highly enjoyed your write-up on The Ninja Warriors Again, Xeogred, and I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I've said it before, but its probably my favorite beat em up of all time. Its not all that fancy or flashy, but I think it gets the guts down perfect. Every character plays so uniquely, acting almost as difficulty modes as well as character selects. I think the game really shines in Hard Mode, where the enemy AI gets really mean, and forces you to really work out the various ways to abuse i-frames, make good use of crowd control, etc. Similar to Contra 3, I think other Beaters have highs that surpass TNWA, but few games are so consistent and non-stop when it comes to just whooping some ass. Ninja is my favorite character, his lack of jump actually makes the game very interesting. Lots of wind-up for his moves, but so much power!! Just booting the game up and crushing dudes with Ninja is so fucking good. Damn, I want to play TNWA now... Again! Also said this a million times, but aim for the SFC release if possible. It has an extra enemy type, and in Hard mode this game is all about how many and what types of enemies are coming at you, and the US version boinked this up cuz hittin womenz is bad. They didn't just cover up her theighs either, they just straight removed her and replaced her with more of the little claw dudes. Lame!

I'll have to check out the SFC version sometime then. Not sure if I'm ready for the Hard Mode punishment though, haha. I did fairly well for my first run though, but definitely had some extremely close calls on some bosses and my HP. The checkpoints seemed fair at least.
So now I'm a little curious, what other non-Z-axis beat em' ups do you guys like?

1. Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (Genesis) 2. Darkwing Duck (NES) 3. Batman* (NES) 4. Journey to Silius (NES) 5. Aladdin* (SNES) 6. Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse* (SNES) 7. Run Saber (SNES) 8. Batman: Return of the Joker (NES) 9. Ninja Warriors (SNES) 10. Thunder Spirits* (SNES)* = replay Replayed the bootleg Thunder Force III again, haha. I've always had a soft spot for Spirits actually, I remember picking it up years ago before I knew of the Thunder Force connection. But immediately upon playing it I realized it was some weird renamed port. There are differences though, no level select at the beginning, one of Thunder Force II's iconic levels is in here, and there's a few other different levels. The bosses are all hilariously easy, but the hit detection, slow down, and flickering can be problematic sometimes. It's still easy to get through on your first try like III as well though. When you have a shield, claw, and homing, you're good to go. I still actually really enjoy the OST for what it is. Technosoft were masters of the Genesis, but this little Seika port isn't too bad and still a solid SNES shmup in my book and recommended for Thunder Force fans to give a fair shot. So now I'm a little curious, what other non-Z-axis beat em' ups do you guys like? On SNES I recommend X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse. For Genesis go with Two Crude Dudes. On NES, I'd say Bad Dudes. For arcade I like The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy. On Game Boy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Fall of the Foot Clan.

X-Men Apocalypse, Capcom!? Looks dope. Two Crude Dudes looks good too. I'll start with those. 1. Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (Genesis) 2. Darkwing Duck (NES) 3. Batman* (NES) 4. Journey to Silius (NES) 5. Aladdin* (SNES) 6. Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse* (SNES) 7. Run Saber (SNES) 8. Batman: Return of the Joker (NES) 9. Ninja Warriors (SNES) 10. Thunder Spirits* (SNES) 11. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch) 11. Thunder Force III* (Genesis) 12. Donkey Kong Country* (SNES)* = replay Still a Thunder Spirits defender... but yes, when you play it back to back with TFIII it's clear which is superior. TFIII is a beast, though I still like IV the most. I just casually beat DKC again in 2:15 at 74%, haha. Took a break and saved/quit in the middle, after I had 40 some lives. So I might have had like 80 something by the end heh. I know this game too well. Such a beauty.

Thunder Force III has a rad OST, and I will always love DKC. I remember getting DKC for Christmas of 1994, and it absolutely blew my mind. I couldn't believe the graphics coming out of my SNES. The fact that the game itself was so great was only the icing on the eye candy cake.

Does it count if I managed to survive F-Zero's three leagues on standard difficulty? There's no credit scroll or anything. I also might have save-stated a bit on Fire Field, that course is rough.

I'd say so. It's worth playing F-Zero on other difficulties, because IIRC Death Wind, Port Town, Red Canyon and Mute City have pathways that change depending on the difficulty. Not a big deal, but does offer some variety.
