Earthbound is the clear "Used to hate it" game for me. I tried several times to get into this game, but I always petered out around Fourside. I think, because it was always mentioned in the same breath as FFVI and Chrono Trigger, that I just expected the wrong things from it. The lack of mechanics, character building, not seeing my characters in battle, the limited inventory, the lack of super melodrama... it just felt so off from what I liked about RPGs.
For some reason, though, my attempt to play the game last year went completely different. I guess expectations weren't there, and I just really wanted to see what people loved about the game (Bone is owed some of this, since I recall seeing it in his top 3 games list several times). It just finally clicked, and the super chill vibe of the game, the almost deconstruction of the genre, the quirky characters and bizarre visuals, everything just clicked into place, and I ended up having a really good time.

I've got to play through Earthbound someday. It's the art style that kills it for me, I'm really not a fan at all of that art style. I admit that's a shallow reason not to give a game a fair shot though. From what I understand it's the writing in Mother II and III that's the star of the show.

I initially disliked Shadow Hearts. I couldn't come to terms with its combat system and I thought the protagonist - Yuri - was an arrogant and annoying kid. Well, I was very wrong. I gave it a second try and then the game clicked with me.
Pathologic is a game I promptly uninstalled after my very first experience with the clunky mess which is its combat system, only to come back to it a few hours later and immediately get hooked thanks to its setting, writing and atmosphere.
Persona 1-2-3 also come to mind. The first two games have intriguing storylines as well as what is generally considered mediocre combat. It eventually grew on me, but it's definitely not stellar. Persona 3 has better combat, but you have to endure almost an hour of anime BS before you'll get to even try it. It's easier to appreciate these games once you know what you're getting into.
I'm looking forward to the day I can include System Shock in this list, even though I definitely don't hate it. Unfortunately, there's just as many games I thought I liked until I forced myself to finish them.

Unfortunately, there's just as many games I thought I liked until I forced myself to finish them. I used to have a big issue with that. If I started playing a game, I'd force myself to finish it. Thankfully I grew out of that eventually... there's far too many good-to-great games to bother suffering through the bad ones. The number one job for a game to do is entertain me when I'm playing it. If it can't do that, it has failed me. So I fail it.

It's the writing (especially with Mother 3), but also very much the general vibe, including the visuals. I can't think of any other look that would suit these games.

I will still push through some games, but as evidenced by the giant pile of RPGs I haven't finished, I definitely won't force myself all the time. I'm almost reticent to start them these days; the time investment has started to scare me off. Still, I know Shadow Hearts is of reasonable length, so that's one I'll make a run at for sure.

I'd started a game of From the New World a few years ago because I liked the modern city setting, but it rapidly devolved into zany anime garbage and I just had to stop. It play Shadow Hearts some day, but it won't be soon since I can't emulate it properly.

it rapidly devolved into zany anime garbage and I just had to stop It is disconcerting that with each successive game the dark serious angle wore thinner and the goof increased. Koudelka is very serious stuff, and Shadow Hearts is for the most part. There's some levity in Shadow Hearts but it's rare and brief. You won't be finding gay porn to make doll clothes or anything like that.

I always thought Covenant managed to find the line without crossing it, something I can't say for From the New World.
