I was just playing that tonight, actually. KRIKzz dropped another update of the EverDrive N8 firmware, which significantly improves the FDS audio emulation. It's not perfect, but the pitch is now correct, so it doesn't make me cringe in horror.
The game is pretty slick, actually. The grapple mechanics come from Konami's arcade game Roc'n Rope, which was designed by Tokuro Fujiwara. If that name sounds familiar, well, he moved on to Capcom and worked on a ton of seminal releases like Ghosts 'N' Goblins and Bionic Commando.

Yes The Miracle of Almana is a very impressive game. It's also a very difficult game. VERY.

I had never heard of the MSX or it's twin until I saw this thread.
My interest is piqued though, from all of my Metal Gear playing and I'm tempted to look into emulated the first outings in those series.
Is there a compelling reason to try to emulate the MSX2 version instead of the NES version? I suppose I would have to get into the MSX2 eventually if I wanted to play Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake since Snake's Revenge is non canon...

I wouldn't touch the NES games, they're completely different and like you said Snake's Revenge is non-canon with no Kojima involvement. No other form of the real MG2 exists outside of the MSX release from my knowledge. You'd probably be surprised at how it plays exactly like a top down MGS, the MGS1-2 radar is essentially the same thing too. MG1 is rough, but MG2 is really experimental and unique.
The two MSX games are both readily available on MGS3 Subsistence or the HD collection though, so that's an easy way to play them.
The MG2 OST is absolutely insane.

Yeah there are essentially four 8-bit Metal Gear games -- two on MSX, two on NES. Those are the only installments in the whole series that interest me at all, wish there had been a 16-bit entry.

Just to make it crystal clear for chibby; the NES Metal Gears are completely different games than the Kojima-helmed MSX originals. Kojima had nothing to do with the NES games.

True, but I still have a soft spot for Snake's Revenge. Folks give that game a lot of flak because it wasn't Kojima, but it's still fun.

Other than the fact that Snake is running around in bright orange PJs, the game itself is pretty legit, to say nothing of the fact that Snake's Revenge doesn't suffer from nearly as many egregious (though humorous) localization issues as the first Metal Gear on NES.

My favorite bit from Snake's Revenge? The villain is Higharolla Kockamamie, an obvious allusion to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. (Pretty sure this never comes up in the game, though. It's only in the manual.)
