I love, love, love roguelikes. They have a similar appeal to me as shmups do, in that there is so much to learn about the game, such noticable improvement, tons of tension when a run is going well, but a single attempt can be had in just a short sitting. Sadly, of the fair amount of these games I've played and sunk a ton of time into, none of them are fit for discussion here. The only borderline one I would throw in would be Diablo, which I think has enough elements of the genre to fit in, at least when played on Hardcore (Perma-death added to it already containing randomized loot and dungeons). The focused story progression and fixed quest lines make it still feel removed from more core roguelike experiences, but randomness and tension of permanent loss are still prevalent, so I personally count it.

Yes there are quite a few more roguelikes on modern consoles and handhelds, but as you said, they're too new for HRG. I'm glad there's another fan of this genre around here, aside from just toei and I.
