They're pretty attractive objects, even if the games sucked. I think that's what made me want them when I was a kid, and also what made them kind of disappointing. There's the association with the franchise you like, even if it plays nothing like it (I remember Street Fighter 2 and Sonic 3 LCD up there vividly, and how I had to try and pretend they were legit), and then there's the fact that that thing looks cool, with that big cover art covering most of it. If I were an eccentric millionaire I'd probably collect them.

If I were an eccentric millionaire I'd probably collect them. Sure why not. I had a few of them as a kid. The Castlevania entry was one of them, I had these also: I had five or six of them. All bought from Toys R Us when I was a kid. No idea what happened to them. You can play some of these emulated online here: archive.org/details/handheldhistory

I had friends that had a few of them, but I never owned one myself. The closest I had was the Mattel Basketball game (which they also sell as a nostalgia trip). I had this one, actually:

The ironic thing is, I think I'd like these units more now than when I was a kid. Back then I was like "this sucks compared to Game Boy".

Somehow those things look much less cool with real people on them.
