Vanguard Princess is surprisingly decent. And we can almost talk about it!

Cammy from the Street Fighter games might do. She's pretty ripped.

I wouldn't mess with Chun-Li's thighs.

Hmm, well, after thoughtful deliberation I'll probably have to go with King of Fighters. I won't bother you with the ins-and-outs of my decision, but I assure you, it was definitely based on very scientific evidence - which happens to be NSFW. Yeah, maybe I can play this.

GET OVER HERE BUMP
So, the new Mortal Kombat game is out... and in HRG fashion, it has me reflecting back and thinking about the series as a whole. The last one (10 / X) is the only one I've beaten to completion and really got into. But I kind of want to go back and check some more of these out.
Retreading the thread, I see that Ex mentioned the second game being one of his favorites for the genre, and some others name dropped the series. I think I speak for all of us here, Mortal Kombat was a household name of the 90's and everyone knew about it, even if you never got to play them. I was always exposed to some of them at arcades or at a friends, but never got too deeply into them.
I'm not a gorehound but I have to admit, there is some cool factor to MK's roster and characters to me. People like Scorpion and Sub-Zero, just straight up look badass even to my adult eyes. The series sounds like it's always been somewhat serious but is generally about being fun and campy as well. Some of the storylines and character relationships actually sound pretty cool and interesting to me, haha. Not to mention, the original movie was fairly legit.
The N64/PSX - PS2/Xbox era seems pretty weird for this franchise, with a lot of experimentation and even some adventure games I think. All I know is that this series has often deviated a lot from the traditional fighting game formula and had a lot of spinoffs.
I know the Genesis games were uncensored, so I'll probably start there and start checking some of these out.
So, any thoughts specifically on the Mortal Kombat franchise?

I like the general vibe to a degree, though as an adult I'm not into gore either, and I can't deny what it meant to us kids in the early 90s. It was literally the coolest thing in the world. That said, I don't like any of the actual games I've played anymore. It's always been a very stiff fighter, and the last one I tried, maybe 4-5 years ago, wasn't any better. It plays as poorly as literally every Western-made VS fighter I've played (with the exception, interestingly, of a few really good indie titles with more simple mechanics).
Also, the first movie is still pretty damn entertaining. I think it works mostly because most of the fights are decent and the pacing is good.

I've been hearing people lately say the series was never the best on an arcade stick either and more of a gamepad fighter. Does this whole series have a button for block? X did... I'm cool with that in Soul Calibur for a 3D fighter... but I think it might be weird in a 2D series. I plan to play a little tonight.
Yeah, the first movie is just a fun kung fu action flick with super wacky characters. Wouldn't be too far off comparing it to tokusatsu/sentai haha.

Beat it! Took about 28 minutes. Used a few credits, Goro was scary! Played Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and accidentally selected Kano at one point. "Rayden" was one of the tougher guys to fight and made me sweat since that's who one of my friends liked a lot in the newer ones too. My man was Sub-Zero in the end. His freeze blast is like a normal Haduken. Scorpion's "Get Over Here" (apparently voiced by creator Ed Boon haha) was super easy, just double back and punch I guess. Love the uppercuts. I guess the button blocking isn't too bad with a 6 pad. I could also do Scorpion's screen teleport but I wasn't sure exactly how I was pulling it off. I was going to look up some fatalities, but you can't pause.
Oh and Johnny Cage looks like a moron here, lol.
Nice music, some of it sounds like a dungeon crawler heh.

Ask Ex, you'll know that my skills in Street Fighter are only matched by my ineptitude at Mortal Kombat.

Ask Ex , you'll know that my skills in Street Fighter are only matched by my ineptitude at Mortal Kombat. Yeah ol' Sarge definitely wasn't an MK fan growing up. I can understand why given his upbringing. - I first heard about MK1 from a friend when it initially hit arcades. He was very enthusiastic about the game. Everyone seemed to be overjoyed with the digitized actors and gore factor - the actual gameplay was secondary. As for playing MK1 myself, I rented the Genesis version of MK1 when it released for that platform. I thought MK1 was "OK", but compared to SF2, MK1 seemed very stiff and kinda boring. Plus I didn't know how to do any fatalities, since that was before the age of ubiquitous internet. However in October of 1994, I purchased Mortal Kombat II for SNES. I was only 15 at the time, but I had saved money from mowing lawns, and had a part-time job cleaning a machine shop. MK2 had only been released for a month at that point for home consoles, so it was still quite hot. This time the SNES version had all the blood and gore intact, and it had nicer graphics than the Genesis version. I had a list of all the MK2 fatalities from some magazine (probably EGM). Some friends and I spent a lot of time with MK2 on SNES, we had a blast with it. I fell in love with the game, and became extremely good with Baraka. MK2 played much more fluidly than MK1, and had so much more content. Between MK2 and Super Street Fighter II Turbo, my SNES saw untold hours of fighting. But by the time MK3 came out in 1995 however, I didn't care anymore. I was burnt out on MK. I remember seeing MK3 in an arcade, and tried it for a little bit, and walked away unimpressed. There was so little innovation, I was totally unenthused. I prefer for sequels to bring strong new ideas and actual evolution, not just extra content in the exact same vein. After that experience, there were a whole lot of other MK releases that I barely played, or just didn't care about. I can't even remember what all released from MK3 until Mortal Kombat (2011). Now that 2011 version of MK was very good, and my wife and I put a whole lot of time into the 360 version. But that's too new to talk about on HRG yet.
