More hacking on the Genesis mini: it's apparently running the same emulator used on the Wii U Virtual Console. I think I remember Genesis emulation being considered pretty good over there, so yeah, not too bad at all.
Also, regarding audio delay: apparently some units aren't fixed up? And some have done tests and are getting wildly different results based on the display they use. This almost sounds like some sort of OS-level issue, or some synchronization thing with the audio portion of HDMI. Don't really know, but I'll be fascinated to see what comes of it, and it may very well complain why quite a few folks haven't noticed heavy audio lag.

Whew, it's pricey, but Analogue is putting out an FPGA-based portable system, based on the Game Boy. But it will also do Game Gear, Lynx, Game Boy Color, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and GBA. $199. www.analogue.co/pocket/

SargeYeah, I saw an article on that. Looks pretty cool since they got a screen that has a 1:1 ratio with the Gameboy’s original screen. If I still had all my GB games, is honestly consider it, since I think portable gaming is what I can get the most out of now. Sitting down to play something at my desktop or on the couch is a real luxury these days.

I can't remember if I've brought it up before, but has anyone here dabbled with the MISTer project? Seems like a pretty neat way to get some high-accuracy, low-latency FPGA emulation of various systems.

I bought my brother one of the SEGA Genesis Mini units for Christmas. I think he'll get my $60 out of it. He's eight years younger than me (32), but he still played plenty of Sonic as a kid. However he was more a SNES player, so I think a lot of the games on this thing will be new to him. Hopefully it'll make surviving snow days up in Maine a little more fun. I'll report if he says it's good or sucks.

Got one for Christmas to give to my nephew. Hoping to play some Streets of Rage 2 with him.

Also, those NES and SNES Classic consoles seem to have climbed in asking price somewhat. I got mine CIB pre-owned for $40, now they seem to sell for an average of $100 on eBay.

Yeah I don't think the Nintendo ones had a long production run, so they'll probably just continue to get more rare from here. The Genesis Mini was/is on sale for $50 recently (think it's normally $80), I grabbed it at Target.

Does your brother still play retro stuff? I think he would (will) if he had the means to do so. For example, I don't think he's knowledgeable enough about emulation to do it on his own. But with a dedicated mini console, I think he'll like it. Currently as far as I know, he doesn't play video games at all anymore. When I asked him why, he said he couldn't afford a console. He's been a dirt poor college student for years and years (though he finally graduates with a PhD next year). Yeah my first instinct was to get him a SNES Classic - but new units are around $150 now. I wouldn't want to gift him a used one, and $150 was too steep on a gamble as to whether he'd even like it or not. $60 was a much safer bet.

Well, I gave in and pre-ordered the upcoming TurboGrafx-16 Mini. The way I see it, it's the absolute cheapest way to have "legit" versions of most of those games. Many you can't even buy digitally anymore, and this also includes stuff like Sapphire and both Spriggan games. Sadly missing is Legendary Axe, but I think that's a rights issue. I also suspect this will be hacked, and wouldn't be surprised if it ends up using the same innards as the SNES/NES/Genesis Mini.
