We're doing this, right? Since the month is coming in just a few days, we might as well get started on calling and suggesting horror games to play for the month leading up to Halloween.
Since I'm rolling old-school lately, I'm thinking of going with one of the early horror RPGs that eventually lead to Resident Evil and so on. There's of course Capcom's own Sweet Home, released in 1989 for the NES, which is pretty well-known. Two years before this was released, though, came two MSX2 games that could be seen as predecessors; Laplace's Demon and War of the Dead. The PC Engine port of War of the Dead as well as the SNES remake of Laplace have both been fan-translated recently(ish). There's a good chance I'll be playing one of the three.
If I don't, it's probably time I hit up Silent Hill 3. Loved the first two games, but never played through 3 or 4.

This may see me shoot for Shadow Hearts, and I'm still thinking I may make a stab at Spike McFang as well.

Well yeah, but I was gonna make this thread on October 1st. But if you all want to jump the gun, fine by me. There's of course Capcom's own Sweet Home, released in 1989 for the NES, which is pretty well-known. I beat Sweet Home myself not too long ago. This was my review if you're interested. Laplace's Demon and War of the Dead. I put a fair amount of time into War of the Dead on PCE. Overall I didn't care for it, although I did appreciate its concept and ambition. The SNES version of Laplace's Demon is one of the games I was considering playing through this October. On that note, these are the games I'd like to beat in October: Dead Space (360) Fatal Frame (Xbox) F.E.A.R. (360) Laplace's Demon (SFC) Silent Hill 2 (PS2) If somehow I manage to beat all those in October, and still have time for further related games, I'll probably check out the Echo Night series.

Of that list, I can vouch for Haunted House and Halloween. Bother were quality experiences last year. I think this year I'll give Ghost Manor and Texas Chain Saw Massacre a try.

If I don't, it's probably time I hit up Silent Hill 3. Loved the first two games, but never played through 3 or 4. I'd love to hear your thoughts on these two. You know from the first two these games aren't super long or anything, would be easy to knock them both out.
I might replay 2 and 4 myself, since I have the Xbox versions of those to check out (no idea why the Xbox didn't get 3). 2 on Xbox is the same as the Greatest Hits release on PS2, which is a bit more rare now. It has some additional stuff and maybe transparent bug fixes. 4 I assume just has better graphics on Xbox. But I love this series so of course I'm going to double dip across consoles.
The graphics for 3-4 make some early last gen games look terrible. It's so crazy how good Team Silent were.
I often feel like replaying Dead Space, then crack up remembering I already replayed it last year. It's just hard to put down that perfection.
I want to be excited for everything Ex is planning to play, but I better level my expectations...

Ghost Manor is ambitious and I like it overall, but the final level kinda sucks... My copy of the game is a double-ended cartridge, with Spike's Peak (which sucks all the way through) as the other end. Ever seen one of those? Wild stuff. The other game I'd recommend from that list is Frankenstein’s Monster, which is a solid single-screen platformer. It also has the second-best Game Over screen ever ( Bokosuka Wars is unbeatable in that department). Controls are a bit wonky, it's incredibly hard with an authentic 2600 joystick.

Ever seen one of those? Wild stuff. I have never seen a double ended cartridge as you describe. You are far more versed in 2nd generation gaming than I. Hard to be mad at that.
Edit: FromSoftware should have been like... WOW!! YOU DIED

Aw well, three of those games up there are favorites of mine and I'm interested in playing the other two as well ( Fatal Frame and Laplace's Demon), so I'm looking forward to your thoughts. If I don't, it's probably time I hit up Silent Hill 3. Loved the first two games, but never played through 3 or 4. I'd love to hear your thoughts on these two. You know from the first two these games aren't super long or anything, would be easy to knock them both out. Yeah, same, it's good stuff. I'd also encourage anyone who liked SH2 to also give Rule of Rose a chance, since they do hit the same note for me in terms of deep characters and tense storytelling.

What happened to Severance and Pathologic? Well I still plan to play both of those eventually, I have them via GOG. I only have so much free time guys, so I'd rather focus on the genre classics initially. Dead Space, Fatal Frame, and Silent Hill 2 are all considered milestones of horror gaming. I think they deserve priority as such. (Not saying the two you mentioned aren't quality releases in their own right.) I think the name "Laplace's Demon" is interesting. It is normally associated with a theory in classical mechanics. Why the game's developers chose that name, and how it relates to a SFC horror JRPG, are mysteries I'd like to solve. also give Rule of Rose a chance That's one I've meant to try for a long time. The PS2 has SO many horror games. But Rule of Rose is towards the top for me. I'm also very interested in Echo Night: Beyond, Kuon, and revisiting Haunting Ground. Horror gaming in general is not something I've ever prioritized, buy maybe October will help me come around to it more. I'm looking forward to what you gentlemen decide to play, and reading your thoughts.
