Weren't we supposed to do a Game Gear month at some point? That's right, I'd personally like to see that. Right now just trying to generate ideas. Bounce stuff, see what sticks. I'd like to see a Club Retro year roster that all of us have interest in. As in, everybody agrees the theme for each month is worthy. In the effort of increasing participation from all active members each month. Even if someone only beat one game for a given month, it's still a good community building endeavor. What about an action-RPG month? We could pare that down with some qualifiers if need be. Like 2D action-RPGs for instance.

Maybe we could be flexible with what we slot in each month; might help with what folks may or may not be feeling at the time.

The only thing I can think of is something I’ve been wanting to explore, not sure if it’s enough for a month though. Basically, I’ve been curious to look into pure 2D platformers that aren’t the usual suspects like Mario, DK, Sonic, and Rayman. Just pure platformers, no action platformers of the Mega Man or Castlevania variety. Not sure what you’d call it or if there’s enough there to constitute a month, though.

I could get down with that, too. Seems like it would be a fine line to ride, of course; Mega Man is pretty easy to separate out, given the reliance on distance shooting, but Castlevania is (mostly) melee, which a lot of platformers have. But I assume you're speaking to more the "hop-and-bop"-style stuff, of which there's a lot. Especially from the mascot era.

You know, "melee platformers" might actually be a better name for the type of side-scrollers I like than whatever I've been using. Though I'd personally put Castlevania in the rarer "candle-whipping platformer" subgenre, or "candle-whipper" for short. As for pure, jumping-oriented platformers that aren't from the big series, I do think that could work. "Lesser-known pure platformers" or whatever. Ultimately, if it focuses more on jumping than fighting, it fits. And games where fighting is jumping are no-brainers.

I've definitely got stuff popping in my head, like the Capcom Disney games (although maybe too well known?), Ristar, Dynamite Headdy, Plok, Aero the Acrobat, Bubsy, various Tiny Toons games, M.C. Kids, Kid Kool, and so on. I don't think there would be any shortage of games that could fit the bill.
I have no doubt there's other stuff that I don't even know about in the Japanese market, too.

Castlevania is (mostly) melee, which a lot of platformers have. The secondary weapons are usually range oriented though. I agree that mascot-oriented platformers are the sweet spot for finding what hooplehead was describing. We could have a mascot platformer month?

Mascot platformer works, even if it conjures up images of Bubsy.
I mostly meant games where it’s primarily about jumping and not combat. I’d say Castlevania is just as much if not more so about the combat than it is about the platforming.

Howabout a "westerns" month? There's all kinds of retro games based on the wild west.

20thcenturygamer anayo Chainsaw Bilqis dunpeal2064 hooplehead Jameson Moulinoski Sarge ShakeWell toei @tsumuri Xeogred Well everybody we aregetting close to the end of the year. Club Retro only has one month left insofar as a preordained theme. Nothing's been set yet for 2020. If you'd like to participate in Club Retro next year, then by all means please give us your suggestions insofar as how to improve the experience. By that I mean: monthly themes you'd like to see, improvements to the model we use, or any suggestions outside those things. Thanks!
