Something TG16/PCE related would probably be cool too. Despite it being like a 12bit-esque system sandwiched in between some of my favorite generations, I still haven't dug into it much. Seems like it has a lot of good shmups.

And some of the best JRPGs of all time. Most of which are still Japanese-only.

Did we decide what month is the big "old games" (1st/2nd gen) month? I'm not great about participating in these things, but I'll gladly make the first (or second or whatever) post of the thread with info and recommendations, if y'all want.

Something tells me SRPGs were a bit too complex for the 1st and 2nd generation, but I'd be glad to be proven wrong.

I do know of an impressively complex strategy game that came out in 1981 for Intellivision:
Utopia is a game played by two players on two continents. Players must build their island nation by building farms, housing, schools, hospitals, and factories and making other improvements, while also competing against another player. Players are able to sabotage the other player as well, but they must also handle maintaining a fleet of PT boats to protect their fishing fleet, building forts to prevent rebellion, and dealing with the occasional hurricane. The game is played in real time. Each player moves a box shaped cursor around the screen to perform construction and moving of boats.
I know that's not really what you were looking for. But I wanted to go ahead and set a precedence for January; I think many of us will come away surprised at the complexity and depth of some of the earliest console games. And that's to say nothing of the earliest PC games.

Yeah, I was looking, and there are a few older RPG classics that I could hit up. The first two Ultima games, a couple of Wizardry titles... seems like a good start. Might look at a few of the more recent ports of those games, though, just for some extra convenience if I go that route, at least with Wizardry. I think I'm more interested in the beginnings of Ultima, though, and I hear they're not ridiculously long, either.
