I used to not score games, but I try to distill how I feel about a game to a number these days. It kinda helps me sort out tiers of games when folks ask for recommendations. Of course, they're all subjective, but there are some aspects of objective quality that factor in. I think more what Ex is trying to say is that there hasn't been much this year that has made him go, "Wow!" I have had the same issue, looking at my ratings. There's nothing retro that I haven't played before that bowled me over, although several indie titles got the coveted 9.0: The Messenger, Iconoclasts, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. And Octopath Traveler. The only 10 this year is... Contra. Of course it's Contra.

Wha, Don Doko Don 2 was developed by Natsume? I did not know that!
Chaos World is good. I'd like to play it again eventually, when I'm lucky enough to obtain an actual cart.

For some reason I've always been very lazy about numbers when it comes to gaming but I'm more into it with shows, movies, etc. Probably because I talk about games a lot more on forums and just get out my feelings on them.
That said I can see what you mean about your second point and after this awesome year of retro gaming for me, the options I have left are going to be more and more 7's instead of the 9/10's haha. And I still tend to exclusively focus on the NES, Genesis, SNES, and PSX... but maybe someday I'll finally dry those wells up. I'm getting excited to get more serious about digging into PS2 stuff again soon, maybe next year. Even for some franchises on the PSX that I couldn't get into (like Wild Arms), I think the PS2 installments might gel with me instead. Even though I've normally favored older JRPG's.
I was going to make a Top 10's thread for the year once we hit next month. Seems like most of us did some heavy retro gaming this year so I'm sure we'll have some good titles to mention.

what Ex is trying to say is that there hasn't been much this year that has made him go, "Wow!" That's exactly what I was saying. Games so good that I think about them when I'm not playing them, and can't wait to jump back into them as soon as I get the chance. That hasn't happened for me much this year. Over-exposure is a thing too I guess.

Even though I didn't score it really highly (7.5), I definitely got to the point where Thief Gold was making me think about it outside of when I could play it. It was weirdly compelling, although often exhausting to play since there's so much stealth.

That's how I felt about System Shock 2. I loved that game, but my shoulders would literally ache from being so tense after long sessions with it.

Got to admit the Natsume NES games were super-satisfying for me, too, since I haven't played much NES in a while. Several big, modern games got in the way as well as my genre diversions. NES is like my comfort food, though.

NES is like my comfort food, though. Makes me recall how some of you guys talk about the SNES being a bit void of this genre... that is absolutely true. Not going to find much on there like these Natsume games. It definitely hit a nice soft spot.
Outside of Power Blazer, maybe some musical/graphical changes, etc anyone else know about any major differences between some Natsume releases?
