Most of us play a lot of games, and we do beat quite a few we start. Not every game we start playing though ends up being worth beating. Due to personal tastes or hang-ups, some games just aren't getting finished. So rather than let those dismissed experiences and opinions go to waste, here's a thread to capture your parting thoughts when you decide; "Yeah OK we're done here."
---
Some stuff from 2018 for me...
Final Fantasy X HD (PS3) Time invested before quitting: ~32 hours Positive thoughts: Nice graphics, quality music, good world building. Reason for quitting: The plot is absolute trash, and it's not worth spending 50+ hours of my life to see this worthless story to completion. Most of the primary characters are really irritating.
Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land (PS2) Time invested before quitting: ~27 hours Positive thoughts: Great graphics and killer atmosphere, very solid dungeon crawling, super tough difficulty keeps you on your toes. Reason for quitting: This game makes you backtrack to an absolutely ludicrous degree. You're allowed to warp back to town, but every time you come back to the dungeon, you've got to re-navigate multiple floors just to get back to where you already were. If this game had let the player warp back to where they originally left off from, or at least the beginning of that particular dungeon floor, I would have stuck with it. I just felt like the developers were purposely wasting my time as things stood.

Namco's Valkyrie no Bouken on Famicom. Sunk about 6 hours into it this year.
Now, I love crusty old Japanese ARPGs. But this one is among the worst I've ever seen. A horrendous Zelda wannabe with tons of grinding, terrible controls and hit detection, and breakable equipment. It's slow, hard as balls, and just miserable. I hate it. I also hate the fact that I didn't/can't see it to the end. I'd like to write a scathing cumulative review for GameFAQs or whatever, and I really hate finishing sequels without beating the first game in the series, but whatevs.
It's tied with Seiken Psycho Caliber: Maju no Mori Densetsu as the worst vintage Japanese ARPG I've ever experienced. Hydlide looks like a masterpiece compared to this shit.

1. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (SNES) - extremely boring in every department except for the awesome music. 3. Dark Messiah of Might & Magic (PC) - too dated and lacks polish, unintuitive boss fights like having to lure a dragon into a hallway to drop a door on its head/neck... nothing in the game really implies this is possible, though I think one annoying NPC was talking about the door in some alien language. Enemies were bullet sponges that took years to kill, I stopped at some room where like a dozen skelatons popped up and said forget this. The novelty of kicking enemies around only lasts a few hours. 4. The Metal Warriors (SNES) - seems fine, but long and hard to master. Assault Suits Valken and Gun Hazard are a lot better. 5. Nightshade (PS2) - seems fine, but you can't invert the joysticks which is annoying, environments were pretty boring. Solid but certainly dated. 6. Urban Reign (PS2) - first offense is making the main attack button Circle without letting you customize the controls. Everything else was just super boring, floaty controls, etc. 100 levels? 100 flushes.

This is the Nightshade I want to play through one day.
Anyway, there are quite a few games I'll never beat. Metal Dungeon is always the one that immediately comes to mind. Bleah.
It's a pretty bland dungeon crawler with terrible pacing.

Another game I will likely never finish: Treasure Master. It's so obtuse, and also infamous for the whole "million-dollar" contest that actually didn't happen because the game didn't sell well enough.
With a game this iffy, of course Tim Follin did the soundtrack.

During my Year of the Sega Genesis (2018) I learned I will never finish the following:
Atomic Runner time invested: 3 weeks This game seems cool at first. Then I got tired of it kicking me in the groin, so I broke up with it.
Aladdin time invested: not sure, gave up on the volcano stage Visually beautiful, mechanically clunky.
Nightmare Circus time invested: 5 minutes Why, Ex? What did I ever do to deserve this?
Vectorman 2 time invested: not sure, saw the last boss though The last boss ate through all my lives and continues in a minute. I can't bring myself to slog through the entire game for another shot at it.
Ghouls and Ghosts time invested: not sure, I think I got to the stage where you have to jump on the statues' tongues 12 year old Ex was gaming god. I can't do it.
Air Diver time invested: 2 minutes It's a 16-bit first person fighter pilot game with really choppy sprite scaling. No thanks.
Bloodshot time invested: 45 minutes As an FPS on the Genesis, this is actually really cool. It runs circles around Zero Tolerance, and I had always considered that to be the king of Genesis FPS's. But it's got these really lame timed escape sequences at the end of each stage and that's what killed my interest.
I also see Terminator 2 the Arcade Game on my shelf. I've never tried it, but I know in my heart I'll never finish that.

You asked for a very hard Genesis recommendation. You didn't ask for a GOOD very hard Genesis recommendation! 12 year old Ex was gaming god. Young ass Ex also beat Aladdin and Air Diver - wish you'd have liked them, but we all have our tastes. The only reason I beat a lot of hard games as a kid, was because I had limited game supply VS unlimited game time. - It's really hard for me to just give up on a game after I've invested a lot of time into it. Even now a part of me wants to finish FFX and W:TotFL. Giving up on a game after you've put over twenty hours in it... it just feels bad man.

Y'all are reminding me I've got 30 hours into Legaia 2... Is it still there, softly calling to you from the dark recesses of a forgotten back burner?

Y'all are reminding me I've got 30 hours into Legaia 2... Is it still there, softly calling to you from the dark recesses of a forgotten back burner? In this case, yeah, it kinda does every few years. I actually tried to pick it back up a few years ago, but never could quite figure out where I was after I'd gotten past some other brick-wall bosses a few years before that. So I don't think this one would actually count in the "not finishing" category, although it may end up there out of neglect!
