I really hated the first Legaia, but I'm still curious about the sequel. My beef with the first was the combination of very long battles and high encounter rate. The story wasn't anything special, either, but I wouldn't have hated it if the gameplay had been bearable. I think enemies are actually visible on the field map in the sequel, aren't they? In your memories, are they easily avoidable, or do you still end up fighting all the time? Do the battles drag on?

Pretty sure it's still random battles in the sequel. However, whereas I'd always bounced off of the first game, I put a lot of time into the second (obviously), and actually liked it a fair amount. I can't say that I remember anything about the story at all, though. Battles are still rather long, but I think they end up a bit speedier than the original. It also helps that you're not having to try to get spells from enemies and whatnot. (If I remember right, that was a thing, where you had to learn your stuff from enemies, and the chance was dictated a bit by how you knocked them down.)
Anyway, now I'm awfully tempted to see how far I had to go. I'd love to clear it out of the deep backlog.

Looking at vids, it seems Legaia 2 does have random encounters, but it seems lower at least. Hard to tell how long the battles are because the youtuber I stumbled on keeps stopping to drone in a bored monotone.
About this thread: I finished Disc 1 of I think Tales of Destiny 2 (the one that has Lunar 2's plot) and dropped it like a hot potato because it was so boring. Tales of Destiny (going by NA naming here, I know there were some shenanigans with the titles) was one of the worst PSX RPGs I've played, too, so...
I decided to take a break after Disc 1 of Legend of Lagoon about 2-3 years ago and never went back to it. I kind of liked it, actually, it's just that the hiatus killed my momentum. I don't know if I'll ever finish it.

Pretty easy to do in an RPG. I finished the first Tales of Destiny, but it's been a loooong time since I played through it. I liked it then, but no telling if I would now. That random battle rate is excessive, and I'm not sure I'd have the patience. I never did finish the "sequel" (which is actually Tales of Eternia); I got stuck on the second disc and just kinda dropped it.
Legend of Dragoon gets ragged on a lot these days (or at least the boards I frequent), but I really liked it. Very solid stuff overall, even if the localization was a little too literal and dry. And those cutscenes are still pretty great.

I usually finish my RPGs, though (it helps to stick to one game at a time), but every Tales game I've played except the original seemed to be trying its hardest to be as bland and generic as possible in every way except the overrated battle system. Phantasia had more personality (owing to the future Tri-Ace guys, I'm guessing), but the encounter rate was disgusting. I used Holy Waters constantly to reduce it and it was still too much. I stopped at the PSX generation, though, so maybe Symphonia or some of the later ones are better.

You asked for a very hard Genesis recommendation. You didn't ask for a GOOD very hard Genesis recommendation! OK thanks monkey paw. >:[ Prepubescent Anayo would spend hours playing Faceball 2000 on the Gameboy, so I feel you.

Those are huge steps up from the PSX entries, in my mind. Some of them definitely cut more generic still, though. Legendia was from a different team (I think the Tekken guys?), so it's a little odd. Vesperia (coincidentally the newest we can talk about) has a large following because Yuri is a cool protagonist, but his combat style felt really halting to me, so I didn't care for it as much.

I bought Berseria on a Steam sale recently, I have heard this is one of the best ones and the main protagonist is apparently more legit than their norm, I dig her weird semi-evil look too. Too new for HRG but yeah I'll just say this is probably the last chance I'll give Tales.
