Castlevania (N64)OK fine why aren't you going to play it: I watched an AGDQ speed run of it. It looked like something from the days when all the 2D games were trying to evolve into 3D and not all of them survived. Probably somewhat impressive when it came out, but insufferably clunky today. Castlevania SotN is more for me. Yep. I played one version of Castlevania 64 at some point (I think it got a re-release that apparently changed some camera work and weird stuff like that?) ... I recall actually liking the game at the time, it reminded me a bit of Ocarina of Time perhaps. I think it was a rental though and only played it once, but I still have some faint memories of it.
BUT indeed... this is one of the handful of N64 games I feel is best "left in the past" and in memory only. It looks beyond rough nowadays, to say the least. And this isn't a knock on 3D platformers, I love the genre and some still hold up really well. But this one... not sure about that haha.

Give it a try, especially if you already own it. It's not as bad as you think. Thanks for the tip. Due to your input, I won't skip it when I get around to having a "Year of the N64". But that might not be for a while a though since I've been prioritizing these console years based on A) my own affinity for the system, and B) how many games I missed out on. I feel like I played the vast majority of S-tier N64 games as a boy, so other consoles would probably take priority first.

Yeah, the rerelease was Legacy of Darkness. That's the one I have. Pretty janky, but better than you'd think based on its current reputation.

PO'ed
It's an FPS where you play as a cook in a spaceship which has been taken over by aliens. The premise is cool and the weapons are kitchen utensils like a rolling pin and throwable kitchen knives, however...
Also, Agent Under Fire and Nightfire on the GC. Partly because they have annoying driving sequences, but mostly because emulating them was melting my GPU. Might play Nightfire on PC but it's a pretty different and apparently inferior game.

I was going to mention this in the Now Playing thread until I saw this. I really try to finish everything I play, but this one has finally broken me:
Donkey Kong 64 (Rare, 1999)
I actually almost beat it back in the day, too. One of the last things you had to do before fighting K. Rool was beat the original arcade Donkey Kong twice, with the second play through being altered to be even harder. And I just couldn’t do it at 10 years old.
So, when I got a Wii U and saw this in the virtual console, I thought I’d finally right that wrong. I was so close, after all.
It was then that I realized my younger self must have been very patient. This game is tedious, even beyond tedious. The long jaunts back to the character select barrels to swap Kong’s to complete certain objectives, the almost parodical amount of collectibles that are actually mandatory for progression in the most convoluted of ways, the redundant move sets for each Kong that fail to distinguish them, and those mostly terrible mini games. They are just not worth the flashes of a good game hidden in here. With over 200 objectives spread over 5 Kong’s which doesn’t include all the other crap you have to collect, I realized I just don’t have time for this shit anymore.
I love the 3D platformers on the N64. It might just be my favorite platform for the genre. But this one is just bad, which is a shame. I think DK could make for a great 3D platformer in the hands of the right developer.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again; I was never, and remain not, a fan of Rare's N64 platformers. I do agree with you that a 3D DKC styled game could be great via the right studio.

Ha. Yeah, I put 30 hours into DK64 back in the day. I apparently had the patience of a saint. Even then, the swapping to Kongs to get the various collectibles was a bit too much. I honestly think just changing it where you could collect items with any Kong would make the game far, far better.
Also, Expansion Pak! Did it enhance the game? Eh... not really. But it did help alleviate a memory leak they couldn't find!

I actually gave them all a replay 2 or so years ago, since I wanted to see how they held up. Banjo-Kazooie was a game I used to love but found only to be very good. It’s concise but almost to a fault, if you ask me. Meanwhile, I actually ended up loving the sequel, but that’s because it’s really more of an adventure game than a 3D platformer, which is why I think it gets derided by fans of the original. One of the levels is basically a Zelda dungeon, and there are even elements of Metroidvania level design in how the individual levels interconnect in interesting and surprising ways. If it weren’t for the controls, I’d say Conker holds up, actually. But since the Xbox version exists, that’s definitely the way to go, so long as you’re only interested in gameplay, since that version has some unnecessary censorship. But yeah, they aren’t the sacred cow that kid me used to think, though I think they’re still very good.

I think the worst part of the Kong swapping is seeing the Kong-specific bananas and being unable to collect them unless you swap to the right Kong. It’s extremely obnoxious.

Yep, obnoxious is a good word for it.
I mean, I think there's a good game in there, it's just buried by so much busy work.
