Let's say I'm still in the mood for the action/platformer Natsume-styled flavor, does that help narrow down some ideas or recommendations I might like? I recommend unto thee: Bad Dudes
Captain America and the Avengers
1990 Arcade game; The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy <---THIS GAME IS AWESOME!

I absolutely agree with Captain America and the Avengers. It's very much in the same vein.
Edward Randy is nuts and absolutely should be played at least once.
As mentioned before, Werewolf: The Last Warrior also has some of that feel. But use save states! Seriously, just do it. There are some ridiculously cheap enemies, and you'll go flying down pits (or drowning) quite easily.

You might want to check Karnov, either NES or Arcade. It's probably their most famous action platformer.
Sly Spy/Secret Agent and Edward Randy are attempts at translating blockbusters (James Bond and Indiana Jones, respectively) into arcade experiences. They go from setpiece to setpiece instead of typical levels and Randy, being the later one, is pretty spectacular. I think they're cheap and play poorly, personally, but hey, worth checking out.
That NES Captain America does look pretty nice, I'll give it a spin too. They also made an arcade beat-'em-up with the same title, but it's so-so.

Agreed on the arcade game. I thought it was pretty cool when I was younger, but giving it a spin recently, it clocks in at mediocre. It does have some hilarious Engrish in it, though. Some super-powered crooks bust through the wall of a bank after a robbery, and say:
"Don't disturb us!"
In an absolutely stellar response, our hero(es) say:
"Why should it goes well?"
Shakespeare, eat your heart out.

That philosophical conversation has been etched into my memory since childhood. Why, indeed? In searching for the image, I found this pretty detailed & amusing writeup about the game. I really like the conversation with Namor highlighted in the article: -Namor: "They're in the sea!" -Captain America: "Thank you, Submariner!" Very helpful. Apparently the SNES port was really awful. We used to rent the Genesis version now and then, it looks like a Master System game but it plays a bit better than the arcade version.

Oh, yeah, the SNES version is trash. I sometimes forget which one of the two was the terrible one, but I just gave it a go. Eww.
That's a fun writeup, too.

I'll look into them. I have a month of Sega Genesis left then it's on to NES for a year.
YES IT IS. I haven't played it personally but I've seen videos. It's on my radar as a cool, arcade-only title with no console release that I'll have to emulate.

I think the Japanese and European releases (Captain Lang) have the levels in a different order, so that they start with a very Sonic-like level, while the US version put a very different pirate board level first so that it doesn't come off as a Sonic clone.

I hope to beat at least three games for this event. The first week of December, and the last week of December, don't look very promising insofar as free gaming time goes. I will try to pull some double duty in the middle of this month though.

I looked up videos of High Seas Havoc, and wow, the animation and art look great. I'll have to check on my special XBOX to see if I have it, though, as I lost a bunch of genesis games in a recent hard drive failure.
