Alrighty, folks, what else should I play for Data East month? What's everyone else playing right now? Why not some Karnov-related games? Karnov was basically Data East's mascot. As a permanently bare-chested, fire-breathing, ex-circus strongman from Russia, created at least in part to make fun of a particular Data East producer, he's the true embodiment of the anything-goes DECO spirit. He's got: two versions of his own game, one on NES, one in the arcades. You'll be glad to hear the NES game is considered superior due to substantial gameplay tweaks, you NES lover, you. He's the first boss in Bad Dudes. He appears as multiple enemy types in the famously crazy Trio the Punch, the offbeat single-screen action games Tumblepop & Joe & Mac Returns, and the overhead shooter Garyo Retsuden, which comes off as a cool fantasy take Commando with a magical bow in the videos I've seen. He's the main antagonist in both Fighter's History and Fighter's History Dynamite / Karnov's Revenge. He's also in Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kikki Ippatsu!, the SNES exclusive, but the final boss is actually Chelnov, from Atomic Runner. As you have some SF2 experience, you'll be immediately at ease with the gameplay in the series, except the two later games have a bit more personality. Worth a playthrough! - As for me, I'm taking a short break from action games, but I plan to be back at it in 10 days at the latest, hopefully in time to finish Atomic Runner myself. Which, if you decide to play it, is also known to be much improved on console compared to the original arcade game.

Ahhh, the Joe & Mac series is decent. The SNES one is really easy and fun with co-op, played that one as a rental with a friend back in the day. I'm actually not even sure I ever knew there was a sequel on the SNES, looks good from watching some footage.
The Genesis game is FAR harder than the SNES one and closer to the arcade version. I tried playing some of this one this year or maybe it was last year, but didn't stick with it after enough frustration. It was cool to see how different the versions were though.
I think Congo's Caper is somewhat related and one I haven't checked out yet, looks cool:

Oh, right, I forgot that I was thinking of giving Fighter's History a go. As for Karnov, I actually beat the NES game back in July. I gave it a 6/10. A few too many flaws, but it's a decent time overall. Certainly not terrible. I think I remember giving the arcade version a go at the same time, too, and I don't think I finished it? Maybe it had limited continues or something. EDIT: Oh, no, now I remember. It's frustrating as all get outs. Checkpointing is very harsh, and you can only take one hit, period. The NES game makes a few changes, the biggest of which is giving you a GnG-style two hits before death. I doubt very seriously I'll batter against this unless I play somewhere I can save my progress along the way, because I tapped out at the sequence leading to the Stage 3 boss. (I was playing on the XBOX.)

For the record Karnov was ported to many other platforms besides just NES. The C64, Macintosh, DOS, ZX Spectrum, even the Amstrad CPC all got ports. Supposedly the Commodore 64 version is rather good, but it was developed and published by Activision, not Data East.

I think that could technically count, given the original source material was Data East? I guess that'd kinda be like playing Ghouls 'N Ghosts for Genesis as a Capcom game, despite the port being by Sega.

Sure it counts, if it's a straight port. They're just reproducing the blueprint created by another company. But I'd guess that "good" for a Commodore 64 port is probably equivalent to Sarge's 6/10 for a NES game . Time is a real problem. If I could stop it, I'd gladly spend a month exploring Data East's output, including all the games I mentioned, and Glory of Heracles 4, especially. But I'm busy working on a big article for a certain series right now that I've been putting off forever, and I don't want to lose my momentum now that I'm on it. Plus I have to work. I'm scheduled to get all of 2 day off for the Holidays - the legal minimum, probably - so...

Oof. I've resolved to never complain about the days I get off, since I work at a university. I get a lot of time compared to most. (I have had to work a few holidays when we had major missions going, though.)

Thankfully my job is good about giving us time off, and paying us for that time. So I'll be off starting 12/22 and return to work 1/3. I have family obligations to attend to during that time, of course. But I hope during that span I can finish my final two chosen Data East games for this event. Heavy Barrel shouldn't take very long, and I'm very much looking forward to Dark Lord. According to HLTB, DL takes about 8 hours to beat. Doable!
