Strangely enough, there are a lot of classic arcade games that I've read about because I have a few guides for them, but never played. Berzerk, one of the earliest top-down shooters, is one of them. Let me tell you, game can get intense. It seems sedate to start, but bullets travel very quickly, and enemies will take advantage of everything, including the diagonals. I found the best strategy was to use the non-symmetrical nature of your firing to clip them while staying out of their firing line. That can be tough when you get surrounded, though, and assessing threats on a respawn can be tricky. I also don't know if this was the first game to use synthesized speech, but it's certainly an early one, given the release in 1980. The robots say stuff like "get the humanoid" or "don't let the humanoid escape". Pretty interesting, and apparently very expensive to implement at the time. Anyway, I topped out with a high score of 6,920. Anyone care to try to give me a higher target to shoot for?

I can sure try! Tomorrow, cause I've slept 5 hours and that doesn't work out well for me. I doubt I'll beat your score since I think you have more shooter experience, but I'll see what I can do. Game reminds me of Dark Arms: Beast Buster, since the levels kind of look like dungeons.

I bumped up my score... to 6,930. Ten whole points!
Dark Arms was a really slick game, I have it on the NGPC. I bought a lot of my stuff when they were selling the collections at EBGames and whatnot. That's also when I snagged my copy of Faselei! off of eBay, which is an actual, legit US copy of the game. They had it ready to go, and the system just died, so the stock was cleared out on eBay instead. I have no idea how many they sold, though.

The more I play Moon Patrol, the more I like it. Probably my favorite of the looping games I played this month. I've gotten far along the Championship course, I should be able to beat it tonight, hopefully. EDIT - Alright, beat the Championship course. After that it just loops over. My favorite part is that guy that appears behind you, but just keep his distance for a few seconds before suddenly rushing ahead at you; really creates a lot of tension. I'm impressed with all the challenges this game manages to throw at you. Having the buggy fire ahead and above was brilliant. Best score so far is a bit over 33,000. I challenge you, Sarge , and anybody else, to beat this by the end of the month. Arcade version. I'm sure I'll increase it, myself. It's the kind of game where you die all the time at first, but the checkpoints are frequent, and since you can get large bonuses for finishing sections rapidly, I'm sure there's potential for exponentially larger scores.

Alright, I'll try to give it a go tomorrow!

Turns out that score was a total embarrassment. I just posted what I had after finally finishing the Championship course, but I just doubled it:

Stahp it! How am I supposed to beat you now? (I haven't tried yet, but the university just got a snow day tomorrow, so I can certainly try.)

That's still a so-so score. Basically, if you can beat the Beginner's course on one credit and last a little while in the Championship course, you'll beat it. I'm gonna try and best that tomorrow, too. To really unlock the high scores, you'd have to be familiar enough with the Championship course that you can also nail it on that same credit, and then do some loops. The record is over a million.

Oof, well, I got up to 18,050 on my first loop. Mostly buoyed on the last leg, with the 5000 point bonus at the end. I'll have to work at getting something higher.

So Berzerk is actually really creepy. I don't see myself putting more time into it, though, cause the gameplay's so basic and I don't like the atmosphere of it too much. Also, running from those smiley faces feels too much like a maze game for me. I don't like to run from things. Sarge, if you want to play another early top-down shooter that has a bit more variety to offer, you should check out Robin Hood on the ColecoVision. It's got 4 distinct levels, and you can actually finish it pretty quickly (it doesn't loop). It's a decent little game.
