I used to play Pitfall pretty strangely. Most people will go left to right, but you can actually do things in reverse order and go left. It can also help quite a bit with navigating the crocs, since it's easier to jump on the safe spot on their head from the opposite direction.
I actually plan on taking on Pitfall 2, though. That game very nearly hits the sort of NES-level ambition I prefer in my games. Heck, it even had a special chip in it to achieve that vision. On top of that, apparently there are no lives or timers; you just collect treasure, and when you "die", you get sent back to the last checkpoint you reached, although your score drains the entire time you're sent back.

Alright, let me issue my challenge:
I've mentioned this game before. It's Samurai, a 1979 Sega arcade game. You've got 3 sword stances, which you cycle between with the action button, and you can keep you sword out and charge by keeping it pressed. There's a guy above you throwing down shuriken at you, too - they can be blocked by keeping your sword raised (ie releasing the attack button). The guys on the sides will you push you away with their poles if you get too close, and by the third level or so there's also guys below that can catch you with some kind of thing on a rope, leaving you to die. You get 3 men to raise as high a score as possible (remember when manuals used to refer to lives as men? In this case, it's literally true - you can plainly see that there are two other samurai for their turn). The best I could do today was 1,640. Beat me! I hope to beat that score next session, anyway. It's just a few minutes in.
There are two different versions, btw. The MAME-emulated version, which lacks sound, and the version on the Sega Ages Memorial Pack Vol. 2 for Saturn, which has sound but plays reaaaally slowly. I recommend MAME, though maybe the other version'd be easier.

Alrighty, here's my high score. In the interest of helping out, there's a risk-reward mechanic going on here. The grappling hooks will immobilize you, but if you kill an enemy while immobilized, you get a whopping 500 point bonus out of it. It took me quite a few attempts to get a score that high, but I know that I could likely do better. I've gotten through waves a bit better than this run, but I manipulated the grappling hooks a few times early and got lucky, then just focused on survival as long as I could.

Hmm, I'll have to hit the game up again this weekend. Did you count the number of waves / levels?

I didn't, but I'm pretty sure I got to the fifth duel fight. Maybe I'll see how far I can get in right now.
EDIT: The farthest I got was past the fifth duel (sixth wave). I won all the duels, somehow. The regular enemies get pretty tricky to take out by that point.

So I tried Pitfall, Pitfall 2, Defender, Kangaroo and Space Invaders (which I used to play in LCD form many years ago), but nothing on Atari 2600 is really doing it for me so far. Any suggestions? Maybe I should move on to the ColecoVision.

I'd maybe try Asteroids, Missile Command, Choplifter, Dragonfire, and Atlantis. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting. Thing is, these days 2600 games don't do much for me either. I'd argue that in some ways, they never did. I mean, as a game-starved kid, I'd take pretty much anything, but the NES just had so much better stuff.
Also, don't overlook the Intellivision. There's some neat stuff on there, like Triple Action and Sea Battle.
I plan on looking more at the Colecovision myself, though. I have one sans power supply, and I can't wait for that USB-based supply to get released.
