he likes to give all the exp to a handful of units and let everyone fall behind In his defense this tends to be a winning strategy in Fire Emblem, and he was deep into that series for quite a while. - I haven't played any Langrisser games, so I don't know what to think from a personal perspective. Insofar as the Urushihara infused SRPGs go, I'd be more interested in the Growlanser series first.

The impression I get from some of Tsurumi's other reviews is that he likes to give all the exp to a handful of units and let everyone fall behind. Well, I don't plan for it most of the time. It just sort of happens that already stronger units and also faster units with more reach like mounted units get more kills and become easily overpowered. Some people don't like having weaker units in their party, other people play all SRPGs like that. Only in my last run at DL I made sure to give all the exp to 2 Generals only and that made the game so much faster and easier for me, I breezed through half a dozen missions in a couple of hours. I don't believe Langrisser IV was so time-consuming for me because some of my Generals were weaker than others, but because of how inherently slow the gameplay is, and while that might have something to do with the ridiculous PS1 loading times, it's not a good show when a game is noticeably slower than its predecessors and there are no significant technical improvements whatsoever to justify that. Obviously, I'd encourage everyone who enjoys the other Langrisser games to give the fourth entry a shot themselves. I've definitely found it weaker in the characters, music and gameplay department and that's kind of a big deal. EDIT: Here's a review that touches on the same gameplay issues I mentioned, but that evidently didn't bother the reviewer as much as they bothered me, seeing as he gave it a 9/10. EDIT2: I'm basically waiting for FE5 right now, so until then I'll probably play a few more mission from the other paths, see if perhaps the missions and character interactions from path B were particularly wack or something. I mean, considering this was the evil path, it didn't feel like even the main character realized he was doing something evil, instead he just kind of stumbled into helping the demons overtake the entire world. When his sisters points this out to him and turns against him, he's like 'Uhh... Wait, are you saying I'm a bad person?'. This is particularly weak sauce when compared with Erwin from DL, whose ideals, behaviour and speech would change accordingly depending on the chosen path. EDIT3: Did play some more missions from a different path. Yeah, not really feeling it. I just want to point out how that doesn't disqualify the Langrisser series as a whole in my eyes at all. A 6/10 is a decent game. I also gave the same rating to FE2 and even a 5/10 to FE4, but generally speaking I have a pretty positive opinion about the FE series.

I've briefly sampled some Vixen 357 and I can't say I've been finding the gameplay too compelling. Feels vaguely like Langrisser but stripped to its bare bones. Nothing terrible about it, just pretty bland. I'll say this though, the character design is absolutely on point. Beautiful early 90s sci-fi anime style. The girls are A+. I'll probably give it another shot for the ladies alone, but I've got another SRPG in my sights for now.

If you thought Langrisser IV was slow, you'll hate Vixen 357. Attacks deal so little damage that the battles just on forever.

I've briefly sampled some Vixen 357I just want to mention - because you generally play series from the very beginning - that this game is a sequel to Hisou Kihei X-Serd ( Flying Mounted Cavalry X-Serd) on PCE/TG16. It does have a full English translation: www.romhacking.net/translations/2780/

Attacks deal so little damage that the battles just on forever. That's true, but turns are also much faster and you can disable all animations completely, so I didn't have a problem with that thus far. I just want to mention - because you generally play series from the very beginning - that this game is a sequel to Hisou Kihei X-Serd (Flying Mounted Cavalry X-Serd) on PCE/TG16. Yeah, I knew about it because Toei mentioned it. I wanted to play that one first, but as the Romhacking page states, the translation is not compatible with Magic Engine and that's the only PCE emulator I feel comfortable using - and arguably the best.

Magic Engine and that's the only PCE emulator I feel comfortable using - and arguably the best. I'm a big fan of Magic Engine as well, for PC emulation anyway. I have noticed Magic Engine can be finicky with ROMs that have been hacked, just as fan translation hacks. For those I use PCE.emu on my phone, and it works.

Ootake is a great PCE emulator no one talks about. Very easy to use, runs almost everything.

Both of those work pretty well. I find that a lot of the PC Engine ISOs floating around don't work well with some emulators, which is usually when I pull out Magic Engine.
My preference when emulating these days is WiiMednafen, or using the Beetle (also Mednafen) cores in RetroArch, when I'm not using an actual Duo.
