I finished Bahamut Lagoon years ago, so it's definitely playable all the way through. I don't remember whether there may have been untranslated characters in the menus or something, but it's possible you just have an older patch.

The most recent patch is 1.3: Because, as my ever so controversial post on emulation suggests, I'm pretty lazy about emulating, I'm using a pre-patched file. It's patched to version 1.3 though. Hmmm, it might be playable now, but if there's more to come in the future I might hold back on that one for a while.

chibby There's probably not more to come in the future. That translation's been out for 17 years and I don't think any of these people are still active. It's quite playable, though, and the gameplay shouldn't give you any problems.

I guess I misunderstood "Dark Force is currently working on a copier bugfix, at which point he will release a new patch with correctly translated item names as well." to mean that more would change in the future. Oh well.
All the same, I hadn't even made my first move in Bahamut, so I might still jump ship.

I would also note that a lot of the ROMs floating around don't patch properly. I can find you a workaround if you need it. I wouldn't be surprised if the "copier" version worked fine in emulators at this point, though.

untranslated characters in the menus These shots are from V1.3 patched for emulators: The menus and items show up in English fine. I think chibby got a bad pre-patched ROM.

Makes sense. I really couldn't remember anything wrong with the translation.

So, Fami adventure games. Finished Portopia the other evening (starting with a replay here), next up is Murder on the Mississippi. I'll post a full Portopia review later. Cool game! Somehow missed this post, derp. Portopia is a seminal classic, I've seen Kojima list the game as a strong influence when he started out in the business. Looking forward to your review. Murder on the Mississippi has looked interesting to me every time I've seen or read about it. I find it very surprising such a complex game appeared on the Famicom as early on as it did. Your thoughts on the experience of playing it will be appreciated.

The menus and items show up in English fine. I think chibby got a bad pre-patched ROM. I think you might be right! I actually tried downloading files from multiple sources, all of which had the exact same issues, so I assumed it was just an issue with the translation. Well then, I've already moved on to something else for now (will post about elsewhere when I have more to say), but if I have time for another during our Fan Tran Feb, I'll come back to it. Seems like a fun odd bird.

I'll come back to it. Seems like a fun odd bird. Man I've been saying that about Bahamut Lagoon for twenty one years now. I really, really should hit it up this year. Maybe towards the end of this month even! But for now I need a break from RPGs. I just finished a 26 hour long one tonight on le Vita. (Which was the first Ys I've beaten in over four years apparently; the last one was Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand on SFC.) Good news is tomorrow night I'm clear to start participating in this thread finally. I don't know exactly what I'll hit up first, but options they are a plenty.
