My initial memories of WiiWare have to do with a friend's Wii actually. I had a friend who bought a Wii back in 2006, and my initial five years with the platform, were spent at his house doing co-op or competitive Wii stuff with him. I think I first became aware of WiiWare as a concept in 2009 when Contra ReBirth released. He invited me over to his house to play through it with him. I saw him buy the game off the eShop channel, install it to his Wii's OS, and that's when I realized what WiiWare even was. Later on in 2011 I bought my own Wii. I ended up cracking it right out the gate, and I pirated a giant collection of WiiWare games just like the dirty scoundrel I am. In retrospect though, hoardy dirty scoundrels may be who ultimately keep digital games from permanently disappearing.
Now there is a metric tyrannosaurus turd-ton of WiiWare shovelware, so parsing through all that can be intimidating. But after sorting through the stank, eventually you'll come across good to great stuff. In that regard, a brief overview of my thoughts on the better WiiWare games I've played... The best WiiWare stuff I've played:Blaster Master: Overdrive <--Very challenging homage. This game will hurt your feelings. Contra ReBirth <--Super fun for co-op action, worth it single player. Dive: The Medes Islands Secret <--My favorite WiiWare title, but it's SCUBA based so no one cares. Excitebike: World Rally <--If you enjoy the NES original, you'll enjoy this excellent remake. FAST Racing League <--Closest thing we got to F-Zero on Wii. Jett Rocket <--A surprisingly competent 3D platformer. La-Mulana <--Legendary super difficult "metroidvania"; I ended up buying the EX physical Vita version though. Mega Man 9 <--I liked it! I made it to Wily's castle and punked out though. Don't tell Xeo. Muscle March <--Lots of goofy fun about guiding hunks through walls.
Decent WiiWare stuff I've played:
Bit.Trip Runner <--Endless runners aren't my bag, but this one is above average. Cave Story <--Fairly decent, great music, the final boss is capital bullshit. Family Go Kart Racing <--I had more fun with this than Mario Kart Wii. Family Slot Car Racing <--I mean it's slot car racing. With anime. Midnight Bowling <--When you finally get tired of Wii Sports' Bowling, this is the next level. Midnight Pool <--I went through a big billiards phase in 2007-2009, of course I played this. MotoHeroz <--Fairly fun racing-platforming hybrid. Pool Revolution: Cue Sports <--Like I said, I loved me some pool. I still do, and I still stink at it. Sexy Poker <--Like I'm going to NOT play this? Yeah right.
WiiWare games I've not played yet, but would like to try eventually:
Alien Crush Returns Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth Crystal Defenders Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King Final Fantasy IV: The After Years Gradius ReBirth LostWinds LostWinds 2: Winter of the Melodias Mega Man 10 Rage of the Gladiator Star Soldier R Stonekeep: Bones of the Ancestors
Most overrated WiiWare game ever:
World of Goo <--I really, honestly don't understand what was so "great" about this banal basket of boredom.
Insert rant about digital gaming. And we've only been talking about USA released WiiWare games. Just imagine all the PAL and Japan-exclusive WiiWare games that were also lost.

Capital Bullshit Indeed! I really enjoyed my time with that game, but damn!

It's 2019 and was time for new avatars, I like what I'm seeing.
I hate Cave Story a lot, haha. Probably a good one for the unpopular opinion thread. I thought about grabbing Blaster Master Overdrive, but honestly... the SFX kind of kills it for me and it looks like an ugly dated Flash game honestly. It was kind of wild how good the PCE selection was for the Wii VC as well. But in the case of non-console exclusives, after my digital libraries for TWO Nintendo consoles did NOT transfer over, I felt pretty damned burned by them so I'm sketchy about that now and reverting back to emulation for the most part. Sure I might consider grabbing some handheld games on the 3DS, since that makes sense... but yeah, I'm pretty pissed about the situation. (you could "upgrade" your Wii VC games to the Wii U for a PRICE! But otherwise nothing carried over... then all that Wii U VC stuff doesn't carry over to the Switch. Oh and the Wii/U VC selection is different than the 3DS's here and there. WTFFFFFFFFF).

Yeeeep. Honestly, you're not really meant to take on the Hell boss the first time through. But me and my walkthrough-loving self at the time did. Terrible, terrible idea.
While BMO might look cheap, it still played really well in my opinion, once you got used to the controls on foot (strafe mapped to the back button on the Wii remote). Some of the bosses are downright bullet-hell territory.
By the way, sometimes, you don't want to upgrade to Wii U, since it can't output 240p. If you're playing on a CRT, the fact that the Wii can punch out 240p is excellent, and makes things look much more accurate to the original experience. Iffy color palettes aside.

Unless you mod the Wii, then it doesn't matter.

Most of my favorite stuff has already been mentioned, but I'll shout out a couple others that I thought stood out: Bomberman Blast: I've been a huge fan of Bomberman for long as I can remember, and some of the most fun I had with the series was with the DS game, as it allowed 8 players to join in off of one cart. I was in high school when the ds launched, so we could very regularly get 8 people with ds's together. Bomberman Blast basically replicates that experience, except without requiring anyone else to have hardware. Its a pretty standard Bomberman game with all the classic fixings (Think Super Bomberman 3/4/5 on SFC), but it allows you to connect 4 wii motes and 4 gamecube controllers for up to 8 players! Even well into my 20s, when someone would throw a get-together or a fight night or something, I'd always drag this along, and it'd end up being the main attraction. I remember once having a room of about 30 people, 8 playing while the rest watched and waited their turn, all buzzed/drunk/etc, all shouting at the screen as various players died and revenged back into the game. Good times. Pokemon Rumble: This game is pretty neat. Its a top-down action beat-em-up, where you play as a pokemon and dash and attack your way through various stages and huge swarms of pokemon, trying to get captures on new mons and cool items and such, somewhat in the style of Diablo (Theme aside of course). Its short at 4 or so levels with a few stages each, but its a nice little romp. Sounds like a mostly forgettable game, but this game is actively still played on a regular basis, and in fact there is a thing called "Rumble Weekend" a few times a year where a bunch of people swarm to the game. This is because the game includes "Shiny Pokemon", those uber rare, slightly differently colored versions of Pokemon that have been in the main games since gen 2. So, since shiny hunting is still a pretty big thing in the Pokemon scene, this game tends to be a nice breath of fresh air, where instead of resetting your game or just running away from thousands of mons, you get to beat the hell out of a game over and over. And since you see more mons in this game than usual, you are actually decently likely to find something cool. Not sure I'd try to sell anyone on either of these, they are pretty niche in what they offer, but I thought it'd be fun to share about em, since I don't see them discussed outside their respective circles as often.

That sounds great. Like, I kinda want multiplayer bomber man now. Maybe Sega Saturn would be a better route for me. I posted about this already but in the late 90's I had a babysitter who wouldn't get off my Sega Genesis because my mom had rented Bomberman for me. XD

I still wish I could experience the madness of Saturn Bomberman with that many players.
My brother played a ton of Atomic Bomberman on PC. You could play online, and he was quite good.

I've played Saturn Bomberman, but never at the max number of players. Maybe more apt in the controversial opinions thread, but... I don't think Saturn Bomberman is the best multiplayer Bomberman experience, and would take Bomberman Blast , or the not-hrg-safe Super Bomberman R over it any day for 5+ player bombing. Maybe I'm crazy, but I suspect its the go-to more because it technically houses more players, and (maybe) not because it is the best multiplayer Bomberman game.
For science, I did run 10 players at once just to see how things ran, and well... 240p housing 10 players is pretty rough. Heck, 480p and 8 players on Bomberman Blast is still probably short of the ideal, can only have so many heads around an image that small (Or stretch it if you're a madman!). Luckily that issue, as well as the funky setup requirements are all solved now, and we have 1080p 16:9 8 player Bomberman goodness that, really, only requires 4 controllers.
Any Bomberman'ing is good in the end though! Saturn (And SFC) do get the benefit of the sweet Bombermanhead multitap (I used the latter to play 3-player Secret of Mana, and it certainly added to the experience).
