even more surprisingly, that was when I'd argue the JRPG scene was stronger on the 360 than the PS3. Kinda weird to think about From what I read back then, Microsoft was trying to get the 360 to sell in Japan, so they subsidized JRPG development for the console.

I recall reading the same. Explains why the 360 also got the lion's share of shmups in that gen, as well as a bunch of VNs, Idolm@ster games, etc.
I think its more understood in communities like this, but I think the popular perception of the 360 is still pretty bad, and I'm interested to see how that shifts as it becomes more of a retro console, as it quite an interesting and varied library.
As for the topic at hand, the Tim Schafer games I've played (Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and to a lesser extent Brutal Legend) seemed to have a lot of thought put into their writing and VA. Psychonauts was my first exposure to his works, around the time of its release, and the writing/VA work immediately stood out to me, feeling more akin to a tv series or movie than a game (At least compared to ps2 games of that time that I had played).

Tim Schafer games I've played - Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and to a lesser extent Brutal Legend I haven't played Grim Fandango or Brutal Legend, but I can confirm Psychonauts has above average writing, as does Full Throttle. Schafer's great at humorous dialogue. He was involved in the design of The Secret of Monkey Island and it shows.

Yeah, I knew Microsoft was trying to go all-in on the Japanese market. It didn't work out. While you might think Microsoft is getting whomped this generation (and they kinda are), the gap is a lot closer than you'd think here in the States.
I'm not sure the 360 is considered "bad", though? To be honest, I derived more enjoyment from it overall than the PS3 last generation. It has a great selection of games, and covers a multitude of tastes outside of JRPGs after that big push. (I also forgot a few oddball titles like Zoids Assault, Spectral Force 3, and Operation Darkness.) It also has a ton more WRPGs than the PS3, and some of them are pretty solid if slightly janky Euro-RPGs.

When it comes to Microsoft, I enjoy the original Xbox, adore the 360, and could not care less about the One. With its insane library, the 360 was basically the PS2 of the seventh generation.

I agree with that. The 360 has a ridiculously deep library of games. Plus, it tended to have the best versions of multi-platform titles. There are only a few games on the One that I'd like to play, which is why I still haven't bought one. I'm actually going to cross my fingers that the next generation is backwards-compatible, and that Microsoft figures their stuff out next gen. This whole deal is cyclical anyway. Seems like whenever Sony looks to dominate, they get arrogant and get whomped, and Microsoft does the same. Honestly, that's why they're in the situation they are with the One.

Well, you can play some retro titles on it, so it's not entirely out of bounds mentioning the system. But yeah, still awfully new.

Sarge mentioned Alundra in another thread - that's a well-written game.

Dang, that should have occurred to me, toei. I agree. Good writing, great atmosphere. I think if I play it again, I'll try it using the Un-Worked Designs patch.
