I imagine all of us here grew up in a pre-internet era, so did you discover any crazy glitches on your own back in the day?
One of my friends and I discovered the weird DKC infinite jump glitch in the first mine cart level. We quickly figured out how to replicate it and were so ecstatic, we wanted to make a submission to Tips & Tricks magazine back then haha. I don't even think CheatCC or any sites were a thing around this time either. Of course we were kids so we never got to writing anything for a magazine, but yeah. Lots of fun discovering this one by pure accident:

Awesome thread and cool glitch.
As you know, I've played the shit out of The Lost Vikings and have discovered two oddities (only the second qualifies as a "glitch" I suppose). I can't find any video of these, perhaps I can make one someday!
First off, anyone who has played this knows that there are keys and locked doors throughout the game. Generally speaking, you need to find all the keys and open all the doors. There's just no way around it... except! a key in the TRSS (trees) level can be skipped. It's this one here:
(oof. It's at the 1:11 mark. Forgot to make the video start there and I can't figure out how to delete & replace it)
What's happening is that a bridge is being lowered for Baleog, who can't jump or "float" across gaps. However, it's possible to guide him to the the exit by making a "leap of faith" from a tall tree earlier in the stage. Just walk off while holding right on the d-pad. Baleog will sustain one point of damage by doing this.
The next one can be triggered in the first "Candy Land" stage. There's a cluster of blocks that needs to be removed by flipping a switch. However, the level contains extra bombs, so said blocks can be destroyed with a bomb instead. If you hit the switch after destroying the blocks (with a bomb) the screen starts shaking back and forth, accompanied by a perpetual explosion sound. This continues until the stage is completed.

Dude I think I've done the first one more that way than clearing it the legit way, haha.
I actually *think* I might know what you're talking about for the Candy level too. That definitely sounds familiar, though I don't think I've ever seen the screen go crazy. Maybe I've accidentally discovered more sequence breaking in some other levels though!

I wish I'd kept a save from Lufia II, triggered in one of the weirdest ways possible. Someone might have caught a controller cord and left our SNES dangling in mid-air. We got it back up, the game was still going, and pretty much everyone had level 99 stats. It was pretty ridiculous. It also took a long time to save.

This is an interesting topic. Unfortunately I'm having a hard time remembering distinct instances of when I glitched a game, and then figured out how I glitched it, and then glitched it again on purpose. I've certainly come across plenty of glitches in games over the decades, just as a matter of consequence while playing. Especially in PC games. Glitches seem most prominent in 3D third-person action games, in my experience.
Edit:
I do remember in Super Star Wars, the game glitched once where smoke trails became a very odd color. When I died and the level reset, the smoke trails were back to their normal color. That was on a real SNES with a real cart too. Not very interesting, oh well. If I remember something better I'll come back and post it.

Yep, I don't expect this topic to be much... but maybe we all have that one little moment of breaking something and discovering how, heh.

I've definitely glitched other games, but they're just not coming to mind right now. If I run into anything crazy, I'll have this thread to post in!
It's probably worth asking, but did anyone here ever pull off the minus-world glitch in Super Mario Bros.? While fascinating, it isn't nearly as crazy as the Japanese version.
Also, there was the door trick in Metroid, which I definitely tried out.

Pretty sure I've done that before, getting one of those wavey floating aliens up through the breakable blocks, then use the ice beam to make a platform. Guess that's just more brute force sequence breaking than a legit glitch though.

Oh, yeah, I'm pretty sure I've done that in a few games. Actually, I sequence-broke Shadow Complex with that foam gun thingy. Completely bypassed a plot trigger I was supposed to hit... but it didn't break the game, thankfully.

I vaguely remember an RPG where equipping and un-equipping a cursed armor repeatedly (by removing the curse) would change your Defense randomly. I noticed it, but I didn't want to break the game, so I left that alone.
