It's funny how I didn't mind the Game Gear's screen at all as a kid. The first time I ever realized a screen could really ruin gaming was the original, non-backlit GBA. I couldn't see a damn thing.

non-backlit GBA. I couldn't see a damn thing. I had that issue with the original Game Boy. When I was a kid I used to use this thing: It worked well! - I'm playing Crystal Warriors right now. I like it so far. Apparently this game lets you capture and battle monsters five years before Pokemon did it.

Go Princess Iris!
I have a RetroFreak so I play all my GB, GBC, GBA, and GG games on a television. Works pretty well, though some games end up looking super-pixelated when enlarged.

Just sit close to a really bright incandescent lamp. That's what I did for my GB/GBA.
I had one of those worm lights, but the problem with them is that you tend to get a pretty strong reflection of it at the angles that give the best illumination. Now, I tend to play GBA on the DS or Game Boy Player, and GB/GBC on either an emulator or the GBP. One of the reasons I'm looking into a backlit solution for GB/GBC is to play Kirby Tilt 'N' Tumble properly with some decent visibility. I suppose I could do what the guys at AGDQ did, though, and just lift the Gamecube for it...

IIRC the GBA screen was also basically a mirror, so if I tried to get a strong light on it (I had to point a flashlight at the damn thing) I'd see my own face in it plus the light. Drove me crazy. I didn't keep that thing for long.

I remember buying DQ7 when it was new and it may have been the first DQ I ever tried playing. Played for what WAS literally hours and never saw a single battle. Sold it immediately. Yeah maybe I regret that now since it's kind of pricey, but now that I'm getting more into the series I still think DQ7 will be one of the very last ones I consider checking out. I honestly just laugh at my own reaction to it from back then though. And yeah, I never got to a battle in Grandia either... but hey I own that digitally on the PS3. I'll try it out again someday, so that kind of contradicts my defense for Suikoden 2's lame intro. Grandia sounds more than worth it after that boring initial hump, plus I thought 2 was amazing regardless of having one of the worst plots I've ever gotten through. I remember a bunch of the later dungeons were giant organs of some evil being or something, the whole thing was just hilariously terrible. But that combat system rocked!
My 104 hour Mass Effect trilogy marathon came to an end the other day, so now I'm ready to jump into Front Mission DS soon. Let's hope I have some energy left for another long game, lol.
If we're talking briskly paced RPG's, off the top of my head I feel like Arc the Lad 1 and Shining Force 1 probably fit the bill for SRPG's. Doesn't get much simpler and to the point than these!

I had one of those worm lights, but the problem with them is that you tend to get a pretty strong reflection of it at the angles that give the best illumination. I never had a worm light, but that official Light Boy (by Vic Tokai) that I spoilered earlier worked fantastically well. Perfect for playing Game Boy under the covers when you were supposed to be asleep. Yeah maybe I regret that now since it's kind of pricey, but now that I'm getting more into the series I still think DQ7 will be one of the very last ones I consider checking out. I recommend the 3DS remake of DQ7 over the original PS1 entry. I still think however, you'd be best served by playing DQ8 on PS2 first. That DQ is a perfect classically styled JRPG, and still looks great even today. I reiterate I'm talking about the PS2 version, not the graphically watered down 3DS or mobile ports. I'm super looking forward to your opinion of that one. The DS version of FM1 is really cool, because it has the original content, plus an alternate campaign where you play as the "bad" guys. The alternate campaign has entirely new missions and a unique plot unto itself. Two games in one! Finishing both campaigns without using a walkthrough or strategy guide took me 38 hours. - Crystal Warriors
Okay I finished the first two "rounds" (stages) of this game today. CW is super simple and easy so far, though not without charm. I like the fact that you visit a town in between battles. I like that you can hire mercenaries for your team in said town. I do wish that you could see the stats of characters on the field when you highlight them, without having to go into a menu to do it. The elemental rock-paper-scissors stuff is okay I guess. Being able to capture monsters in battle, and use them to fight with, is neat. I've enjoyed what I've played of this so far, although it's very much a lite-SRPG. And yay for a strong female protagonist from the early '90s!

I agree with Ex, Dragon Quest VIII is the best one to jump in with. Number seven is more for series fans in a lot of ways. I also think the 3DS is the way to play these days, but those intro changes are disappointing and understandable at the same time.

Honestly I've been wanting to hit up DQ4 (DS) next. But I own DQ8 on the PS2 so that'll happen someday! Too bad DQ6 (DS) is super pricey.
I hope you two didn't already forget I played DQ5 last year... but to be fair, I don't think I could name anything you guys beat either.

I almost did, although I did vaguely remember you playing something in the series. That's not my fave in the series, but it is solid. I actually like DQIV and DQVI more. I have a ton of nostalgia wrapped up in DQIV, so I'm not the most objective about it, but Ex hadn't played it until recently and dug it, and toei also believes it to be excellent, so... it ain't all nostalgia.
