In some cases, I can understand why you'd want one. A few of the fan translation repros are pretty cool, especially if you want something that feels more authentic than a flash cart. I mean, that's why I made a few of my own back in the day, although I didn't pretty them up (they still have the Deja Vu sticker on 'em, with a little label I added so I can tell between Radia and Earthbound Zero). Now, there are folks that make new boards so you don't have to butcher another game for your repro. For the folks that can't solder, it's a decent option if the person is overcharging, even if it isn't strictly legal.

I actually have a few of those repro fan translated carts, from when I was really gung-ho about playing carts on hardware. I think I paid $75 for Terranigma, Gun Hazard, and Tactics Ogre from some website, and I'm glad I have em. I really like two of those games, and I really want to like Tactics Ogre. They can be shitty though. I also have a repro of Shin Megami Tensei for SNES, which I played for about 8 hours straight, was really digging it... and then I found out it has no battery. I got it for free in some larger transaction I made, I think you'd be safe buying those from a site that specializes in them, but still soured me a bit. I totally get the appeal of these though, in the same way I get people wanting to plop an actual cart into an actual console. The "too many games" thing that people experience would probably be just as noticeable on a flash cart as it would be in an emulator, whereas these provide a close proximity to the authentic experience, but also with words you can read!

I personally don't have the "using ROMs/ISOs is overwhelming" issue myself. I like to have a lot of options with my gaming, the more options the better. For my tastes such potential variety is liberating rather than staggering.

No... battery? Did they just forget to put it in, or was it a board that didn't support it? That's just lame.
That's a good point, too; lots of folks get paralyzed by that kind of choice.

Oh yeah, I know repros are a thing and some of them were definitely appealing to me at some point, like a US copy of Terranigma, or Seiken Densetsu 3's fan translation in a cart for me to own. I just don't know why anyone would buy these off ebay of all things. I'd only go through the official channels for stuff like this, heh.
I used to be overwhelmed when I downloaded full rom sets in the past. With endless options, I didn't even know where to start. But I could probably manage that fine now and I do want to get some full sets of stuff I'm just casually interested in now, like the N64. But I tend to just download stuff one by one when the mood strikes, or stock up a few games that I've researched for my own little "planned to play" set. Better safe than sorry though, with the way things are going, I should maybe just get a bunch of full sets of multiple stuff sooner than later.

If you need help finding fullsets, I can help. They're still not terribly hard to find (yet).

Might be PM'ing you soon then Sarge, hehe.
And yeah it's fantastic how affordable HDD's are thesedays. I bought an 8TB WD just a few months ago but kind of want another one already, double or triple back-ups! Though it's also tempting to get an external SSD, so maybe I'll wait a little longer as those prices keep dropping a bit too.
