You guys have a different definition of "short" than I do, I guess. A lot of these games would take me 1-2 weeks easily.
@ex any variation of the first two Ys games is awesome. Except for Famicom Ys 1. It sucks bad.
Y'all should try Lagoon.

Is there a fan translation of the X68000 version? The SNES version seems pretty awful, especially seeing it featured in SNES Works.

Yeah nothing about Lagoon screams "play me!" to this gamer. But maybe someday I'll give a chance.
Here's a random blurb of more entries for this thread, if I post something someone else already did, sorry, I'm in a hurry today:
Title/HLTB time:
Fallout 1 = 17 hours Golden Sun = 22 hours Jade Empire = 16 hours Magic Knight Rayearth (Saturn) = 13 hours Mass Effect = 17 hours Mega Man Legends = 7 hours Mega Man Legends 2 = 10 hours Mega Man X Command Mission = 18 hours Paper Mario = 23 hours Suikoden Tactics = 20 hours Super Mario RPG = 17 hours System Shock = 13 hours System Shock 2 = 13 hours Vandal Hearts = 17 hours

Maybe some of these are closer to the time frame bonesnapdeez is looking for: Alcahest (SFC) - hltb says ~4hrs. I booted this up some years back to test it out, and it seemed quite fun. I had never realized how short it was! May have to revisit this one soon, now that I know I could knock it out in a day. Ganpuru Gunman's Proof (SFC) - hltb says ~ 4hrs for this one too! This is closer to Zelda than RPG, but it looks fun, and that short completion time is quite appealing. I've always looked at this game fondly, but haven't played it yet, may have to remedy that soon as well. These may also be borderliners, but the Igavania games like Symphony of the Night and the like tend to be on the shorter side. SotN itself is around 5-6 hours if you don't do the reverse castle after, and even a full run probably clocks in on the low end. Aria, Dawn, and Ecclesia are all pretty well-paced games too, maxing out at around 10 hours for the latest entries.

Yeah nothing about Lagoon screams "play me!" to this gamer. I'm kinda surprised. It's certainly cut from the same cloth as King Colossus.

I'm kinda surprised. It's certainly cut from the same cloth as King Colossus. While I did not watch the video Sarge posted, because I'm no fan of who created that video, I have seen other videos of Lagoon's gameplay. The super short sword attack doesn't look ideal, and enemies/bosses seem to take hits on the order of being gratuitous. But I still plan to give Lagoon a try someday. I have an archival directory of yet-to-play 8/16-bit action-RPGs, and its ROM is sitting in there.
And yes, if bonesnapdeez hasn't played Alcahest yet, I agree he should try the game. My HLTB says it took me 5 hours 25 minutes to beat it back in 2016.

Basically, the video makes the case that the changes to the combat, without making changes to the enemies' behavior and lack of invincibility mercy on your character, make it a pretty terrible time. The original very much was cut from Ys' cloth, and while I neither hate nor love bump combat, it sure seems like that would be the way to play Lagoon.

I personally like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest just for the simple mechanics and little puzzles. Maybe I just have nostalgia vision from playing it as a kid and revisiting it as of late.

FFMQ is a decent time for sure. It's not bad at all; I beat it last year, and think that despite all the hate it gets, it's actually quite solid. A little simple, but don't take that to mean you can't die, 'cause you definitely will see a lot of game over screens. The game isn't overly punitive, though, so it's easy to overlook. (I've had many battles end with two characters getting turned to stone...)

Always enjoyed Mystic Quest too. I like the little ARPG elements in the dungeons, the aesthetics (especially the music) and the old-school RPG charm.
