They did some comparisons of Bloodstained on Digital Foundry. Turns out the best versions (as you'd guess) are X1X (for 4K visuals) or PS4 Pro (for rock-solid framerate). This is ignoring PC, of course. The PS4 hits some major framerate dips, and definitely doesn't stay smooth, nor does the X1, which drops to 900p for the resolution. Switch... well, the less said, the better. Interestingly, they didn't mind the graphics as much (or the framerate, which stays locked at 30 FPS for quite a bit), but pointed out my big issue with the game: input lag. It's bad, y'all. 140-ish ms bad. That's double the console versions. I knew it felt sluggish, but dang. That's ridiculous.

Dang it Sarge I really want you to play this game. But it's looking crappy for ya. The Switch version is terrible, your PC is too old, you wisely don't own an X1, and your PS4 isn't a Pro. Man this sucks. No reason now to get that PS4 Pro with the PS5 on the horizon. Guess it's time for a new PC!

The same developer later did the Leynos remake which is also pretty great.

Not sure what GPU I'll go with; probably sticking with Nvidia. I'd love to go absolutely nuts and get something like a RTX 2080, but I suspect that's not my optimal setup. I'd also love that 16-core Ryzen chip, but that might be overkill too. I can probably justify that a little better, though, given that I could also use it on some work-related projects.

From the brief research I did a week or two ago, the RTX series sounds pretty good. I'm on a GTX (1060) and it doesn't really sound worth the upgrade just yet. In your case if you're still going to hold off on a new rig or other parts, maybe wait out on the GPU too? I'm going to hold off for the next line, hopefully Q1 2020 so I can upgrade before a certain game I hope the rest of my rig can still handle. My motherboard and CPU is nearing its limits around the corner I'm sure, but I hope to keep this rig going for as long as possible. My first custom PC built in 2013!
If you weren't particular about lag input and all that (I know you are Sarge), I don't think the PS4 version sounds all that bad and even Game Sack, HappyConsoleGamer, etc played that one. But yeah... a bummer to not be on the hype train but as always, this game isn't going anywhere and you'll probably play a more smoothed out version if you wait it out.

Yeah, I think the PS4 version would still be acceptable. It's really just the input lag that's killing me more than anything. It drains all the fun out of movement, and that's one of the best things about these games. They really shouldn't feel sluggish at all.

Fthis game isn't going anywhere and you'll probably play a more smoothed out version if you wait it out Indeed, by the time Sarge plays the game, it might be that "ultimate" version we were talking about. He could end up with all the DLC ready to go, plus all the final stability patches to boot. And yeah Sarge, a game like Bloodstained needs precise and immediate controls, any lag is just unacceptable. - Yeah Gunhound was a really great tribute to the Assault Suits games. Figured you'd heard of it. Well, here's a link you might like: store.steampowered.com/curator/6865283-Mech-Lovers/

Man this sucks. No reason now to get that PS4 Pro with the PS5 on the horizon. Guess it's time for a new PC! I'm in a similar situation. I have no PS4 or XB1. I have a PC that can run the game well but I insist on physical releases unless the digital ones are steeply discounted. That leaves me with Switch as my preferred option. I don't mind graphically compromised Switch ports, because I played the Switch versions of Doom 2016 and Fortnite and enjoyed both, so Bloodstained with potato graphics would be OK by me. Besides, I have this weird interest in filling my Switch library with retro-inspired titles (like Sonic Mania and Owlboy). But the input lag in the Switch version of Bloodstained is where I draw the line. I can't put up with that. I'm not heartbroken about it, though, because for as much as I love Symphony of the Night, I think I love the 8 and 16-bit linear platformer style of Castlevania games even more, and I already the Limited Run physical version of Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. So I'll probably focus on that while I wait for them to either fix the Switch version or for the digital-only PC version to go down in price.
