I saw that the other day, and it looks legit.

Awful song, and I'm not a fan of Way Forward's generic anime artstyle outside of the main gameplay... but the main gameplay looks like it could be legit. Are these the same girlfriend characters from past Kunio games? I remember two of them being playable in Kunio-tachi no Banka, but I can't remember their names.

I wish the in-game art looked as nice as the promotional art.

I actually dig the song. I think it fits, even if it's not what I would normally listen to.

Kunio-kun is a fairly weak series; that may end up being the best of the bunch. $30 for a download though....... We'll see.

Sadly, I think you're right. A lot of the Kunio games are... iffy. I still think River City Ransom is fantastic, but after playing some others in the series, it feels like they bottled lightning with that one. I also feel that way about the NES version of Super Dodge Ball, which I believe is still the high water mark for those spinoffs.

I just checked my collection, the only River City related game I legit own is this:
I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of this series in general though. Every time I try to play the original on NES, I get bored with it in about 5 minutes. I can understand why RCR NES has its fans though. I think its graphics have held up very well over the years.

I like the style, but it's really the feel of the fighting for me. It has that Double Dragon-esque impact that really appeals to me. And, much like Simon's Quest, those RPG elements went a long way for me.

The 4-player fighter is fantastic, and one of the first arena fighters, if not the first. There's a fan remake that's super legit, too. Kunio-tachi no Banka is definitely in the upper-tier of SNES beat-'em-ups. The Master System port of Renegade is good, the Game Boy beat-'em-up is probably the only good game of its type on the GB, the Dodge Ball games are really good. Shodai on the SNES is admittedly mediocre. It's a very solid series, and RCR isn't anywhere near one of the best games in it. There isn't enough of interest in the world or any story to make the non-linear elements really worth it, so it mostly just amounts to an unfocused beat-'em-up where you just waste some time wandering and grinding. Downtown Special (the Japan-only samurai spin-off) added some more RPG elements, but it's plagued by constant, atrocious slowdowns, so I can't bear to play it. At least the GBA remake isn't as heavy on grinding. I'd really like to play those more recent 3DS games that expend on the RPG aspects, though. The banchou setting is perfect for me, so a game where you really get into that universe, with the super solid Technos-style beat-'em-up engine, could be amazing. I doubt it'll be WayForward's, though. Hopefully they stick somewhat close to that and don't try to make it a cheesy '80s homage or some bullshit like that.
