An hour into Control and I'm really digging it. It's immediately weird in all the right ways and captivating. I don't think the trailers or marketing really did it justice, but heard lots of great talk about it on podcasts. The sound design in particular is phenomenal, so I might rock my headphones the whole way through this one. I absolutely love its aesthetic too. It took me about 1 minute into this for me to forget Quantum Break exists, I think that was clearly a product of Microsoft and not really a passionate product from Remedy. I probably already like this more than Alan Wake, which I dug fair enough. Still need to completely finish Max Payne and play 2 eventually, I'll... remedy that someday.
While the David Lynch vibes are here in full force, I'm really getting a lot of Cronenberg vibes too (specifically The Fly, Scanners, Videodrome era). Other than that, I'm getting a lot of Half Life (Black Mesa) and Portal vibes too.

I looked at some gameplay footage and combat looks much faster and cooler than I had imagined. I like how it switches to an over-the-shoulder angle when she shoots. I'm actually kinda trying to find all the games that have over-the-shoulder view when shooting besides the obvious RE, The Evil Within, etc. since I like it more than the regular third person camera. There are several reasons for that: better view of the target, often the crosshair gets replaced by laser sights, devs can't be lazy with the reloading animations since the weapon is so close to the screen, etc. Not very interested in cover-based shooters though.
Anyway, I'd like to play through Alan Wake first, but Control is definitely on my list.

Do you have examples of what you mean? I'm guessing you like when "aiming" zooms the camera in closer? Then you can take in sights when just walking around and exploring as it's panned out further.
One mistake they made in Alan Wake that bugged me when I replayed it on PC more recently, is that the camera shifts back and forth to both sides of the character. I prefer when the camera is locked into place on the left side. I'm right handed and RE4 probably cemented that preference. Some games have made the sides optional now which is nice and that includes Control, thankfully. You just push down on the D-Pad and it'll shift mid game if you want.
The combat was honestly pretty good in Quantum Break, so I suspected as much here. Everything else in that one was pretty lame though. I heard a theory the other day, that the HUGE 30 minute live action cutscenes might have been some mandate from MS, as Quantum Break dropped during their initiative on wanting to make Xbox the "all in one" media device for everything and had some TV shows planned, etc lol. Remedy loves FMV's though so maybe it was their idea, but I dunno. That game just felt soulless and the characters/story did nothing for me from the chunk I played.
Alan Wake's combat is kind of gimmicky and does get a bit thin, but it's a good time overall for the atmosphere and characters.

Regular third person camera: Over the shoulder camera: Yeah, I like it when it lets you zoom in like that, even better if you can walk around while aiming. I played Alan Wake before but I don't remember much about it, sounds weird about the shifting camera and definitely confusing for me as well being right-handed, I'm used to the RE4/5 angle by now. Quantum Break sounds super uninteresting to me, never liked seeing actual actors in video games, except for some short cutscenes in between levels as in Dark Forces 2, not 30 minutes.

Yup. I think it's neat when the camera zooms in and out in third person games now. It's like "iron sights" for this perspective.
never liked seeing actual actors in video games Agreed, I wish Kojima would get this memo...

I wish Kojima would get this memo... Yeah but Kojima really just wants to make Hollywood movies... so using real actors gets him one step closer.

Still excited for Death Stranding later this year, but I could see that one going either way.

I actually think the setting and story concept behind Death Stranding are very intriguing.
He just completely ruined all movies and TV series starring Norman Reedus for me, too distracting.
