hooplehead 's discussion of this game's sequel got me interested in the original. Turns out the 3DS version includes a 100 stage "Super Mario Challenge" campaign. These are stages made by Nintendo themselves:
I don't know if this mode is included in the console version, but I'd rather play something like this on handheld anyway. For $19 brand new off Amazon, seemed like a worthy acquisition. I think this is the final 3DS acquisition for me though, there's really nothing left in the library physical or digital I'm interested in. Except maybe Fire Emblem Warriors if I do buy that New 2DS XL eventually.

I don't think they were, actually. I should probably pick that up at some point. Definitely a worthy snag.
As far as FE Warriors is concerned, it's on Switch as well, so if you snag one, it'll probably be better there.

I don't think they were, actually. I think you're right, the "Super Mario Challenge" 100 levels must be exclusive to the 3DS version. Very low key inclusion. The only outward indication this exists is on the back of the 3DS version's cover art: This'll be a good use of my 2DS someday.

I've wanted to try one of those games at some point. Got extra close to getting Maker 2 when it dropped this summer. But Nintendo doesn't make the online features and level sharing easy, so I just thought realistically... would anyone even play my levels? It just felt like I'd be wasting my time with no real reward. Not to mention when I watched some streams of Maker 2, 90% of the levels people made were kaizo-styled diabolical junk and not really in the flavor of actual Mario. That pretty much killed my interest.
Maker 2 has a more elaborate "campaign" that sounded cool. I know big fans of the first game took issue to the Switch's inability to do two screens though, so I can see how the Wii U one was probably much more fun to work with.

Yeah to be clear, I have zero interest in making my own Mario levels. I just want to play the courses strictly made by Nintendo themselves.

Yeah to be clear, I have zero interest in making my own Mario levels. I just want to play the courses strictly made by Nintendo themselves. That's mostly what I'd want, too, although I know there are a few folks that have designed decent levels themselves. While I enjoy watching someone play super-technical levels, I have no desire to do so myself. Marveling at the skill (and time) is enough for me.

Can't vouch for the 3DS courses in any way, but I can say that Maker 2's Nintendo courses are some of the most creative Mario courses I've seen in a long time. It's cool to see Nintendo's take on some of the weirder stuff that came out of SMM1, and they always nail it.
As for the online stuff Xeogred mentioned, you don't have to look hard at all to found a bounty of excellent courses. The most popular courses of the week are usually made by creators that also have a ton of great stuff under their belt.
By the way, you can also check out what some indie devs have cooked up. I only played Celeste after playing through the levels made by Matt Thorson, the lead designer of Celeste. Tons of gaming Youtubers and other devs have accounts each with a half dozen or so really cool courses uploaded. And the ones who don't have anything uploaded have a list of courses they've liked that are almost always something cool.
Last but not least, you have communities like the Mario Maker subreddits, where people do level exchanges. I've come across a dozen or more awesome courses through those means, and that numbers only that low since I've been so busy with the Story Mode and courses from creators I like.
So it's definitely worth it if you're willing to put just a little bit of effort into finding cool stuff. And sharing your levels means posting them on some Mario Maker community, where the good stuff almost always rises to the top.

The Messenger is free on EGS. I waxed euphoric about this one earlier, so I definitely recommend snagging it.

Snagged Left Alive and Wasteland 2: Director's Cut for PS4. Had a $10 coupon to burn at GameStop, so it only set me back a whopping $9.64. Also, Bad North: Jotunn Edition free on EGS. Next week is Rayman Legends, which is a fantastic platformer. EDIT: Dang it, had a big post about GameStop's BF ad. Anyway, lots of great games on sale, seriously. I predict I'm going to be dropping well over $100 this year, at a minimum, with Control at $30, Guacamelee 1/2 for $25, Metal Wolf Chaos at $15, Spider-Man: GOTY at $20... and that's assuming I don't cave on stuff like RE2 at $20, Etrian Odyssey Nexus at $25, and Trials of Cold Steel at $40. Oh, and the Genesis Mini at $50! www.gamestop.com/deals/black-friday
