Just one of the absolute best and an incredible remake of the ultimate DQ final boss tune...
Still kind of bummed I absolutely bodied the true final boss in DQ11, but I guess this was MY music. I was the final boss. [X] could not withstand my immaculate powers. The explosive Angry Channeled Magic Burst, the planet splitting Unbridled Blade, and a hundred boomerangs left and right!

That's some Hiroki Kikuta alright and I'm always a fan.
I remember reading, like many Square Soft composers of the 90's, it sounded like he was killing himself working on Secret of Mana 1-2. All nighters, maybe got ulcers, etc. I think it happened to Mitsuda too...
But what's the deal with Hiroki Kikuta? I'm sure most of us with opinions on the SNES Mana games and their combat can put that aside and agree, the music is stellar in both games. Why wasn't he THE Mana guy? Was he hard to work with? Did Square not like him or his style? Does he do something else for money? toei!?!
He just always strikes me as a composer that should have had a more lucrative career or something. But it's kind of slim in the long run.

After producing and composing Koudelka in 1999, he left to become a freelance composer. Since his departure he has formed his own record label, Norstrilia, through which he produces albums of his own compositions and collaborations with other artists, as well as his previous scores. His music has been performed in concerts such as the Symphonic Fantasies concerts in Cologne, Germany in September 2009, and selections of his works have been published as piano arrangements in sheet music books." A lot of Japanese creatives end up either starting a business or finding a way to work as freelancers. Sounds like the two best options to escape the soul-crushing system everyone else labors under.

Huh, yeah that's good to know. There probably is a chance he's lived a happier life than some bigger iconic videogame composers out there, haha. He was maybe TOO involved with Koudelka. That combat system was wack.
I think I'll still forever be salty he didn't do more Mana games though. There's a chance I maybe would have played more of them by now if he was the lead composer on more of them.

That was not his fault: "Although Koudelka used turn-based combat on a grid and random encounters (similar to traditional RPGs), this was not Kikuta's original intention. He originally planned a real-time battle system with free movement within the environment, combining mechanics from simulation and adventure games. Interactive environments, such as furniture, were also planned to play a part in combat.[18] Kikuta wanted to break away from RPG conventions, but other Sacnoth staff were reluctant to follow his example and retained traditional ideas from Square. Kikuta later regretted his lack of direct influence on the game design.[14] About the battle-system design, art director Matsuzo Machida (credited as Matsuzo Itakura[19][20][21]) said that it was designed to be easy so adults who did not normally play games could see the game's ending; in hindsight, the team could have increased the challenge.[19]" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koudelka ) A bunch of Sacnoth's staff was ex-Square. Apparently the design ethos in the studio was democratic.
