Well, I didn't want to spin this off elsewhere, although it probably makes sense to have a PC hardware thread. Just saw an article, and apparently the mid-range Ryzen 5 3600 is going to beat out Intel's i9-9900k single-thread performance. Impressive, to say the least. hothardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-5-3600-zen-2-intel-core-i9-9900k

Just saw an article, and apparently the mid-range Ryzen 5 3600 is going to beat out Intel's i9-9900k single-thread performance. I think the key there is "single-thread". How many 64-bit games are being developed to be executed single-threaded these days? As I understand it the i9-9900K series is optimized for multi-thread capability. I'd be more interested in seeing a test on that front between these two processors. Also the single-thread difference is a mere 52 points, a marginal difference you'd likely not notice in real life. THAT SAID don't think I'm knocking the Ryzen. That's still very impressive performance all things considered. And the price difference between those two chips would be a no-brainer if you're PC buying on a budget. For what Intel charges, they should command a more obvious lead even on single-thread.

Well, they've been leveraging multi-core stuff for a while (and doing very well on that front), which is why I find it impressive that they've managed to catch up to Intel on single-core performance. Typically that has been where AMD has lagged quite a bit. If this single-core result holds up for the Ryzen 9 3850X, with its 16 cores... Intel's in trouble. At least for now.
But yes, I agree, things are becoming more and more optimized for multiple cores.

Intel's in trouble. At least for now. There's one thing that's bugging me though. I don't have time to read the entire article you cited, but did they have that i9-9900K's built-in Turbo mode enabled? IIRC the i9-9900K is the first mainstream processor to include a 5GHz Turbo clock out-of-the-box. I'm not sure how its Turbo mode is engaged, if it's something you manually enable, or if it's purely driver controlled. But when Turbo is enabled that 3.6Ghz becomes 5Ghz! I find it hard to believe that model of Ryzen could keep up with the i9 at its Turbo 5Ghz speed. Unless I'm missing something here. Edit: I just read that the Ryzen 5 3600 can only turbo to 4.2 GHz.

Depends on what tricks they're pulling on the chip underneath, memory/cache, stuff like that.
I think Intel chips have taken a bit of a hit with that speculative execution vulnerability, too. Pretty sure the patch hits it pretty hard.
And yeah, take anything right now with a grain of salt. We'll see some more detailed benchmark data very soon. And you're right, that's compared to 3.6 GHz. I don't know if that's base versus base, or turbo vs. base, or what.

The Switch Lite is a thing. www.nintendo.com/switch/lite/Man, that d-pad sure looks nice... though my OG Switch never leaves the dock. The price point for the Lite seems solid but for us adults here, just seems way more ideal to spend the extra money for the original or wait for the next model. Anyways I wanted to ask, is it just Sarge (I think?) and I here that own a Switch so far? I'm super curious about Mario Maker 2 and seems like something we could get into here. I never played the first one on Wii U but I'm glad, because everyone says the first was the perfect marriage between software and hardware when it came to designing the levels with the touchscreen, having access to the TV screen too, etc. So it sounds like the veterans are disappointed with 2 being a bit clunkier, since the Switch can't do two screens and the touch screen seems a little weirder. But it'll all be new to me so oh well. Might pick it up for this weekend to mess with. Apparently the story mode is pretty neat too, not something you'd buy the game for alone, but it sounds like some effort went into it still and it's more than just a little tutorial.

I may pick up one of those Hori d-pad controllers, just for handheld play. They're cheap and have virtually no extra features, but it gets you that d-pad.

Yep, I saw that coming a while ago. Nintendo's Vita 2.0 is full steam. I'll probably get a Lite someday to play the handful of actual Switch exclusives Nintendo produced.
