I've tried twice to get through DKCR on Wii. Both times I got very aggravated with it and quit, despite making a lot of progress. My biggest issue were the waggle mechanics introduced by the Wii Remote motion detection. All the damn time DK would be rolling off ledges, because the Wii Remote thought I wanted him to, when I did not. I have since bought the 3DS version of DKCR, thinking perhaps direct controls would alleviate that issue (although the 3DS version reduces the graphics pretty badly). That said, there's still a lot of less-than-stellar level designs in DKCR. It pales in comparison to the original DKC. (Notice I said DKC, not DKC2 or DKC3.) I own, but have not yet tried, Tropical Freeze.
I hated Kirby's Epic Yarn the first time I played through it (via co-op). Years later I "got it", and now I think Epic Yarn is a pretty good time.

Huh, I always thought the DKCR level design was great. There are a few where the difficulty was obnoxious (those rocket barrel stages), but the rest are really inventive. But the Wii controls took a long while to click, though when they did it felt great, actually. The only thing I could never consistently pull off was the blow mechanic to reveal secrets. The dpad would always ride a side input and I’d roll to my doom.
I do think you’d like Tropical Freeze, though. It fixes all of my issues with DKCR, including how it implements difficulty, secrets, etc.

The aesthetics of DKCR are great. It's a good looking game. Some of its level design is appreciably inventive. It also has plenty of terrible stuff, the rocket barrel stages are a good example. I believe DKCR is quite overrated, but it's not exactly unusual for me to have differing opinions than the masses. If I'm playing a modern platformer I love, I'd much rather play Sayonara Umihara Kawase, or Trine 2, or Sonic Colors (Wii or DS) any day of the week over DKCR.

I would probably like DKCR more if Tropical Freeze didn’t exist, so I totally get it. If I’m playing a DKC game, it’s probably from the original trilogy or Tropical Freeze.
I definitely have to add those three to my list. I’d like to find a 3D Sonic game that I would finally like.

I’d like to find a 3D Sonic game that I would finally like. I've recommended it many times, and been ignored many times, but once again Sonic Colors on Wii. Best modern Sonic game I've played period.

I've played a bit of it, Ex , probably three hours or so. It is pretty darn solid. I'm not the best judge, though, since I'm not a huge fan of the Sonic games in general. (I like them, don't love them.) Colors plays in 2D for a large portion of its run time. hooplehead : Yeah, I tend to be a little picky when it comes to movement tech. Now, I'll absolutely play games that I don't feel have excellent control, and love them, but a lot of times, if you give me a game that just "feels" right, it's already going to go up quite a bit in my mind. Games can be helped tremendously when just moving around feels fun. That's one of the things that The Messenger nailed. I did play through DKC Returns, and it was probably a 7/10 for me. I don't think it's bad at all, although those barrel stages were not fun. I played on 3DS, which doesn't have the motion controls, but you get reduced resolution and frame rate. I think there's a patch out there for the Wii version to remove the shaking mechanic, so that might be very much worth checking out. As regarding the original trilogy, I still like the first game the best myself. I just like the way it flows, and it's got a simplicity that I really enjoy. DKC2 is still good, but it's not my favorite. I actually ended up liking DKC3 better than that; there were some really neat level designs there that impressed me. I've got Tropical Freeze (both digitally and disc, thanks to a freebie Nintendo giveaway when Club Nintendo didn't suck), but haven't put enough time into it to really see if I like it a lot more than DKCR.

SargeI can understand that. Super Mario 64 is in large part a favorite because of how fun it is to run and jump and play around with your movement. As for Tropical Freeze, I could've sworn it controls a little differently than DKCR, since I played them pretty close to one another. However, that could just be me conflating the difference of playing on a gamepad vs. a Wiimote. The game is polished like no other, and it not only fixes a lot of frustrations from DKCR, but it improves on it in just about every way. I'd probably write an article on it if it were a retro game. And Colors sounds really interesting knowing it features a lot of 2D sections.

I thought this thread was "Modern 3D Platformers"? Did Xeogred change it? I'll have to add modern 2D stuff that's good later then. WTF ... do you see my posts before I even publish them? Eerie lol, I originally titled the thread "Modern 3D Platformers", but then yeah thought it would be more ideal to let 2D be discussed here too. Hmm well I did edit the first post, maybe I posted that title initially and you saw it, then I edited it haha.
Anyways yeah, the varied DKC opinions here crack me up a little. I think bonesnapdeez loves DKC1 as well but I forget about the rest.
hooplehead : It's a subjective thought but I think DKC1 has the best atmosphere of them all. It's such a gorgeous game with dense, colorful, tropical locations. Probably my favorite OST of them all from top to bottom too. And I feel like DKC1 is a case of "less is more". You can 100% it by finding all the secret bonus levels, but other than that it's really straightforward. Whenever I go back to DKC2, I absolutely despise how you access the Lost World area. Let alone just having to collect all those coins, then can only play one level pure world, what the heck. I appreciate that DKC2 ramps up the difficulty big time though, which feels naturally fitting being a direct sequel. But "drab" comes to mind with its dreadful atmosphere. I mean, I guess it is K Rool's island and comes off pretty dark and depressing for a Nintendo game, that's cool in a way... but it just wears off on me after awhile thesedays. I'm not even sure I have a favorite world in this one. As for DKC3, I think they got the tropical vibes back and appreciate that a lot, although I don't like the first two worlds much at all. So that one is a slow burner early on. Then it's chalk full of collectibles and crap that gets in the way, lol. But I think it has some excellent stuff in the back half.
Also, I just love playing as Donkey himself even if he doesn't have much to offer other than that palm stomp. Having him back in the two Retro games and those being more bright and colorful again were a plus to me.
I tend to prefer melodic music and you can hear a lot of Kenji Yamamoto / Metroid Prime in Returns' OST, so I guess that's why I favor it over TF, even if they got the man David Wise back. Definitely not saying it's bad though, but I like his SNES work more. You might dig this interview: hardcoreretrogaming.boards.net/post/17469

XeogredI can appreciate not digging the vibes from DKC2. For whatever reason, that sort of tone always felt oddly comforting to me. It’s a big part of why I love Metroid, oddly enough. I also like having those secrets unlock stuff, and it didn’t bother me since DKC2 without the extra area already has more levels than the first game. Metroid Prime is probably my favorite Metroid after Super, so I’ll definitely revisit the Returns soundtrack. And thanks for sharing the interview. David Wise is a legend just for the original DKC soundtracks alone.

Now unlike Ex, I LOVED those stickerbrush levels in DKC2.
