I can think of another game which is revered by millions today, but I just can’t enjoy it because I didn’t play it at the right time. I honestly thought you were going to say Pokemon. people in Sarge and Ex's age bracket generally don't seem like OoT was as impactful to them Maybe "the age you play a game doesn't matter" but... Around the time that OoT came out, instead of playing it, I was playing stuff like Half-Life, Thief: The Dark Project, Fallout 2, Resident Evil 2, Battlezone, Metal Gear Solid, Turok 2, Quake II, and F-Zero X. At age 19 those games resonated with me much more strongly than TLoZ:OoT.

I knew of Half-Life, MGS1, RE2, Turok 2, Quake 2... Parasite Eve, FF7, TRAG Hard Edge, Duke Nukem 3D, etc at that time too. OoT was just another piece of the puzzle blowing my world away in the late 90's.

Haha no I grew up with that too. Although I did adore Link's Awakening DX when my cousin lent it to me. I nearly beat it but got stuck on the final dungeon then had to give it back to him. When GBA was still a big deal I really wanted its version of LttP as well as The Minish Cap. But I didn't get either. Did you ever play Minish Cap? Sure, there were adults in the 90's who also loved OoT, but for me personally I think it was also an age thing. During one of my playthroughs (maybe the one on Gamecube) I noticed everything just seemed... smaller? Like I remembered it as really huge and significant but now it was all toy-sized. I think being 9 had a lot to do with how incredible it seemed.

Did you ever play Minish Cap? Yes I did, back in 2005, via emulation. Sadly I never got past the final dungeon, because around that time I built a new computer, and got distracted by all the shiny new PC games I could play. I remember enjoying The Minish Cap quite a bit though, I've often thought of going back and actually completing it (from the start). Also it took me far too long to realize that The Minish Cap was a word play of Diminish Cap. Which is rather clever, considering the bird cap Link wears (Ezlo) shrinks him down.

Don't get me wrong, I really, really like it now. That 3DS version is 9/10 material, easy. It just didn't floor me back in the day.
I'm actually kind of surprised that Link to the Past didn't click for you. In many ways, Ocarina just adapts that formula into 3D. I'd argue that LttP has much quicker pacing, which I think helps it quite a bit.
Minish Cap is pretty great. Flagship proved they could pull off a reasonable Zelda game with the Oracle games, and Minish Cap is no different.

I don't remember thinking much of Minish Cap, but it's one I need to replay someday. The Oracle games I played later in life, mid 2010's or something probably and I absolutely loved them. Wish we got that third one!

Wish we got that third one! I had no idea there was supposed to be a third one. Is there any info about this online?

For the final paragraph under "The Triforce Series", I had always heard that the idea of linking the games was one of the biggest issues and proved to be far too complex across three games

Yeah the third one we never got was about using colors as the central puzzle theme. (As opposed to time and seasons in the other two.) I never thought using colors as the puzzle agent was the best idea though, there's a lot of color blind folks in the world.

Nice writeup, Anayo. Very informative for a complete Zelda ignoramus like myself. I'll get to it eventually. I've gotta say, the original Fire Temple chant is infinitely better than the silly WiiUWiiU chanting from the new version. Hopefully you can find roms with the original track and red blood. I knew of Half-Life, MGS1, RE2, Turok 2, Quake 2... Parasite Eve, FF7, TRAG Hard Edge, Duke Nukem 3D One of those is not like the others.
