Since July's unimaginably popular theme is all but dead now, we might as well move on to the next Club Retro event... Let me explain how this theme works... Choose a retro game(s) that long ago you tried to beat, but couldn't, instead the retro game(s) beat you. Now it's time to enact revenge, and finally slay that manxome foe.AND/OR
Choose a popular widely lauded retro game(s) that you've always meant to beat, but never got around to for whatever reason. Now it's time to beat that sacred cow, and find out if its teats truly extrude gilded nectar.
So that's the gist. Now let the struggles commence!

Option 2 sounds like Vagrant Story might fit this month for me. I don't think I totally understood the game mechanics when I played it back in the day, despite getting far (I think) and liking it a lot. It's still my favorite Hitoshi Sakimoto OST too. But I also think it "defeated" me in a sense because I recall getting stuck at some illusionary forest maze area, which is perhaps what impeded my progress. Not sure if that rings a bell to anyone?
There's also Gradius V...

The first time I played through Vagrant Story, that's where I hit a wall too. Although mine was a technical hurdle; my memory card died and I lost my save at that area. Vagrant Story is amazing. Yes. Beat it.

Hey, I did my part! I do think this month will lend itself well to folks participating. A bit like the "Summer Challenge" at Racketboy where you pick an undisputed classic you've never beaten and play through it. This gives that option, playing a game you've always wanted to, or finishing one that has always eluded you. I guess I could have waited on Shadow Hearts until now, but I'm glad I didn't. I may consider polishing off that Legaia 2 and Threads of Fate run I've had for years. I could also do The 7th Saga... ...or maybe even something super dumb like Treasure Master.

Oh, that's a good point. A couple of those are more unfinished business than anything. The 7th Saga and Treasure Master both saw me quit them, though. I think I had an easier time with The 7th Saga, to be honest. Treasure Master might not have even seen me beat the first stage. It's pretty awful, honestly. Might be worth saving that one for Horrorble Month.
I think it's pretty rare for me to explicitly quit a game, though. It just kinda happens, especially if I have other games to play and I get brick-walled.

Well my man, maybe Option 2 is more your speed for this theme then. There's a whole lotta top-tier super well reviewed FPS games I'm sure you've not beaten yet.

I’m pretty sure every game I’m planning to play this month actually fits this theme! Most of the games I hope to play this month are NES White Whales that I always meant to play/beat but never got around to.
I’m hoping to finish Bionic Commando this week, actually. After that, I’m hoping to tackle Mr. Gimmick and Blaster Master, two other fairly big White Whales for me on the system.
I do want to fit in the first two Castlevania games in the Igavania style, too. Circle of the Moon is the game that made me want a GBA.
Theres also some White Whales that fit the first category, too - all of the NES Megaman games that aren’t 2 or 3. I’ve played them, but I’m fairly certain I never beat them. But I’d like to do a whole run through of the series again, so I probably won’t fit that in for this month.

Bionic Commando, Mr. Gimmick, Circle of the Moon You are in for some serious fun with those three for sure. By all means feel free to come in here and discuss your experiences playing them. I'd consider all three of those White Whales insofar as cultural popularity, well Mr. Gimmick might be more of a cult classic. But it deserves to be right up there with Kirby's Adventure IMO.

I guess the other part of that equation is that I've been trying to knock out my white whales for years now. A huge portion of them were on NES, so beating some of those ultra-tough games has been a priority. Blaster Master is absolutely a great one to shoot for this month! I also really liked Mr. Gimmick. You may want to consider playing the Japanese version there, as it has extra sound channels.
