This is the sister topic for the retro version. What has been the best year in gaming from 2010-2019? Will it be this year? Was it some other year? (Again, I went with 2017, and I'll say why later.)

Great idea for a topic!
I’m also going to choose 2017. For me, it gave me my favorite Zelda game ever, my favorite Sonic game, and my favorite non-Metroid Metroidvania. We also got the best CRPG I’ve played in a LONG time. Oh, and an art game that works almost as much as a fun game to play as it is as an experience. Plus a new Mario game that’ll easily be seen as a new classic. If I were to list my favorite games of the decade, these games would all seriously be at the top of the list:
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Super Mario Odyssey - Sonic Mania - NiEr: Automata - Hollow Knight - Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Prey - Cuphead - Splatoon 2
And that doesn’t include stuff like RE7 that I still haven’t played. That said, 2019 is already a pretty insane year. Stuff like RE2 REmake and DMC5 look like stuff that could be just as good as the games I listed above. But I have yet to play anything released this year.

Third vote for 2017.
My 2017 GOTY list:
1. Nier Automata (favorite game next to Demon's Souls for the current and last gens. This beat Zelda for me, which still surprises myself). 2. Zelda Breath of the Wild 3. Sonic Mania 4. Yakuza 0 5. The Evil Within 2 6. Prey 7. Metroid Samus Returns 8. Super Mario Odyssey 9. Tekken 7 10. Resident Evil 7
I played these in 2018 but they were technically 2017 releases. Both are strong enough I could probably knock some stuff off that top 10 above.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch) Nioh (PS4)
--
2018 I didn't even have a top 10, but my favorites:
1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna The Golden Country (Switch) 2. Monster Hunter World (PS4) 3. Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4) 4. Soul Calibur VI (PC) 5. Dusk (PC) 6. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (PC) 7. Mega Man 11 (PS4) 8. Super Smash Bros: Ultimate (Switch)
--
So far 2019 has been kind of stop and go for me, but I think in the long run it'll stand out as a really strong year as well. Neo Indie wise Bloodstained, Blazing Chrome, and Ion Fury is some of the best stuff I've played since Shovel Knight or Axiom Verge, etc.
2019 WIP: 1. Resident Evil 2 Remake 2. Sekiro 3. Devil May Cry 5 4. Bloodstained 5. Blazing Chrome ?. Ion Fury
What I want to play that's out and coming out:
Judgement Fire Emblem Three Houses Link's Awakening Remake Control Astral Chain Dragon Quest 11 S The Outer Worlds Death Stranding Doom Eternal

My favorite games from 2017:
- Mario Odyssey - Breath of the Wild - Horizon: Zero Dawn - Metroid: Samus Returns - Ys VIII - Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - Blaster Master Zero
Seriously, folks, if you haven't played Ys VIII, I highly recommend it. 2017 greatly skewed my numbers that year toward modern gaming, what with three massive time sinks (Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2) vying for my attention.
Last year was solid, too, although not edging out 2017. But it did give us the new God of War, which was far, far better than I'd have ever expected. I've played through the first two games and the first PSP game (and played a bit of the rest), but the new formula goes so far beyond what those games did. While I'm not as stingy as some with my 10/10s, I actually gave it that score. It's effectively a proper action-RPG.

Nice list. The new God of War is one I want to get to as well sometime. Would you say it's a bit Zelda-esque? That's the vibe I've gotten from all the reading I did on it back then. Horizon Zero Dawn didn't do it for me after a few hours. Felt just like all the Ubisoft open world games, but the setting was very cool and it was exciting for Sony to have a new IP. Guerilla finally got free from Killzone. Blaster Master Zero ruled. Still need to play Zero 2, which looks even better. Specter of Torment sounds great too. I beat a LOT in 2017 too. 1. Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour (PC) 2. Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter* (PC) 3. Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter (PC) 4. D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die (PC) 5. Yep, I'd say that it is quite Zelda-esque, actually, which probably accounts for why it appealed to me so much.
I'm not sure I'd say BM Zero 2 was better, but it definitely was fun. And Specter of Torment was a blast, especially since the levels were completely different this time around. I'm still waiting for King of Cards to land.
As far as Horizon: Zero Dawn is concerned, I started to feel some open-world fatigue myself, then I realized, no, I don't have to do every little thing. I decided I'd just go for the important stuff and leave the collection stuff behind, and the game improved significantly for it. And no, I never felt underleveled despite staying to more critical path quests.

Maybe I didn’t play enough, but I felt 2018 was a pretty weak year after the decent streak we had from 2014 through 2017.
Then again, I did not like the new God of War at all, so that could be a big part of it. As someone who’s really into action games like Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden, the concessions they made to the combat and gameplay for the story and cinematic presentation that is now the Sony house style did not pay off. But I realize I’m in the extreme minority on that one and I can see someone getting more out of it if they like the story.
The only games that I really liked were The Return of Obra Dinn, Into the Breach (favorite game of 2018), and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
I also didn’t get to check out Dusk, Mega Man, and Monster Hunter, which I can tell I would each at least liked.

Respect+1 Good taste sir. As soon as I heard the developer of Papers, Please had a new game, it immediately went to the top of my list. Paper, Please was such a clever and tightly designed game that just works so incredibly well, despite the fact that I wouldn't necessarily call it fun - although that's certainly the intention of that one.
I definitely prioritize indies these days when it comes to new releases. They just seem to click with me more due to the lack of constraints many AAA games seem to have recently. Plus, it doesn't hurt that they're at most $20 (though I always wait for a sale).
