The Punisher is the best Capcom beat-'em-up, IMO, because of the variety and abundance of weapons and superior pacing, which is something Capcom sometimes struggles a bit with (as in Cadillacs 'N Dinosaurs, where you need to knock every boss down about 400 times before they finally die). It's pure carnage, yet there's enough hand-to-hand combat to keep the fundamentals solid, unlike Aliens VS Predators which goes a bit too far in the mindless direction.

Yep. I seem to recall that The Punisher also does gun combat well too, a real rarity in a beat 'em up.

Yep. I seem to recall that The Punisher also does gun combat well too, a real rarity in a beat 'em up. Yeah. Not only that, there's two types of gun combats. There are scripted sequences where you pull out handguns and there's a sort of auto-aim going on that serve as a nice break from the standard action, and then there are machine guns and so on that you pick up as regular BEU weapons and use until they run out of ammo.

Ew, that's worse than us right now. Not by much, but still yuck. I didn't dig AvP as much as some. The combat didn't feel as good to me as past Capcom brawlers, even if it was marginally deeper.

My favorite Capcom beat 'em ups - favorite beat 'em ups period - are the Dungeons & Dragons arcade games. Yes I'm talking about Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara. However I can absolutely understand why some people do not care for those games. They're a bit more convoluted and plodding, as a result of the RPG influence. For me though they're awesome. My second favorite is the Golden Axe series.

You know, I see a lot of folks rag on Golden Axe III, but I really dig that game.

Yeah, I'm a Golden Axe 3 fan, too. It actually adds to the fighting engine with the blocking and low attacks, and it has a fast, super mobile character (panther dude), which is always a plus. And multiple routes. And great music, like almost every GA game. And I like the sprites and the desert levels remind me of desert battle backgrounds in Phantasy Star IV.
I can't get into those arcade D&D games, though. The fighting just doesn't feel right for me. Same for King of Dragons, but it doesn't even have the elements that set the D&D games apart, so it's just a super mediocre game. At least Knights of the Round is decent. I just think Capcom's hand-to-hand beat-'em-ups are generally better.

See, I agree on the D&D games. The combat's pretty deep, but I never could get it to quite feel right, for whatever reason. I need to put more time into the sequel, though; maybe it will click. King of Dragons, though? I love that game. I used to not like it as much as Knights of the Round (it's got some really nice, meaty combat), but KoD is a blast with the different characters. I love how weak the Wizard starts out, but eventually becomes a killing machine. I've beaten it as every character, actually... When I brought up GAIII, I went for the soundtrack and am listening to it now. What do folks think of Captain Commando? I generally enjoy it, but I feel the SNES port suffers because I'm pretty sure you don't get all the cool weapons you did in the arcade version.

I dig Captain Commando. I think it may be the first Capcom beat-'em-up where you can run? And not only that, but you can change directions north and south while maintaining the sprint, so when you play as the ninja you can run behind bosses and hit them in the back sometimes. It's also got this really fast pacing with lots of short levels which is another plus.
Meanwhile, I think I'll drop Batman. I like the first two levels, but everything after that is just obnoxious annoying NES crap and I'm not enjoying it at all. At this point I have to admit to myself that the NES isn't for me. There's a small handful of forward-thinking games I like, but most NES games just blow to me.

That's how I feel about most SMS actioners... but hey, we all gots different tastes.
I remember some of the games you didn't enjoy, but which ones do you think were really good? I'm pretty sure I've asked this before, but darn if I can remember... (I do remember you didn't care for Castlevania or Mega Man!)
