Ex You sure you're not thinking of 3x3 Eyes? Turns out yes, I was thinking of 3x3 Eyes. Similar names + sleep deprived brain had me confused. Wow I didn't know Echo Night Beyond had gotten expensive. I might check out the first one myself. Back in 2007 I had a real copy of Echo Night Beyond, and I remember playing the game for about thirty minutes. I also remember not liking it, but that was back when I was a less patient player, and didn't "get" FromSoftware. I did think the sci-fi slant was cool though. IIRC @tsumuri enjoyed Echo Night 1 & 2, but he didn't care for Beyond for some reason. Considering how much I enjoyed the first FF last year, this is gonna have to be a must play then. Xeogred I think it'd be cool to see you play some horror games where you can't fight and destroy your adversaries.

Haha, I love this. Very well put. I’ve watched tons of bad movies and I always wondered the same thing about them.
Hope you enjoy Dead Space and Fatal Frame II more, if that’s what you end up tackling this month. I’m sure you will.
By the way, I think you might have some trouble trying to play RE0 on a PS2, haha.

And nice work on 8 Eyes, Sarge. I can see a knock-off Castlevania being a bit of a nightmare since that sort of game really lives or dies on how tightly designed it is. And it’s a double-whammy for the theme! Might be pretty busy this month with life stuff to participate, but if I can, I had a few candidates I might be interested in taking on. I think I might actually play Castlevania 2, since I always skipped that one based on its reputation, but apparently it’s not that bad? I’m thinking of going with the fan re-translation since I’m not sure if I’ll have the patience for nonsense riddles. Plus it’s technically the first ARPG style of Castlevania. I also might tackle the original Silent Hill, since I only ever played 2 and 3. But we’ll see how things go with RER2, since I’d want to do the second scenario before moving on from it.

I'm a big fan of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest on NES, definitely recommend it. Although you might like the game more with this hack: www.romhacking.net/hacks/1032/I'm not a fan of the original Silent Hill at all, but maybe you'll like it. Most people seem to.

hooplehead ExI noticed that too. If you look at the comments for youtube videos related to almost any movie, tv series, videogame, etc., no matter how awful, there's always somebody who's a big fan . And if it's something older, there's definitely going to be people going "they just don't make them like this anymore", even if it's literally the Backstreet Boys or some total pap from the past. hooplehead Yeah, I encourage you to play the OG Silent Hill if you liked the sequels at all. The story isn't as good as SH2's, but the atmosphere is even stronger.

Sci-fi is cool, but I didn't care for Beyond because 'puzzles' revolve around hiding objects in the most asinine places and because getting close to ghosts turns your screen black and gives your character a heart attack.

toeiThen I’m sure I’ll dig the first one. The atmosphere of the series is really unmatched in the genre from the two I played, although that was over 10 years ago at this point. Curious to see how they held up. And yeah, nostalgia is a fickle beast it seems. Funny how Backstreet Boys were trying to stage their comeback a few years ago, likely due to those folks. ExThanks for the romhack recommendation. I might still take a look at the original before committing to an altered version, depending on if the cryptic riddles of the original are actually due to poor translation.

So I forgot to mention it, but 20thcenturygamer's post on the game makes a good point about 8 Eyes' story. From Wikipedia, here's your plot summary. Definitely sounds bonkers, and it doesn't really fit with what we see in the action. Well, turns out that good ol' localization changes are at work, and I can see why. The original plot had the eight dukes as actually part of a cult of devil-worshipers looking to resurrect Satan. Apparently the hero is even from a MI5 predecessor and is named Julian James Bond (thanks again to 20thcenturygamer). Well, at least part of it makes sense.

Thanks for the romhack recommendation. I might still take a look at the original before committing to an altered version Personally I enjoyed the original C2 quite a lot, both as a kid and as a young adult. I've beaten it twice; I think the last time I fully played through C2 was back in 2001. So while it's been a long time since I've replayed the entire thing, I still listen to its stellar OST from time to time. And I remember much of the experience fondly. The C2 hack I mentioned offers clearer hints and an actual overworld map, which would be definite improvements. I will someday play through C2 again using it. I'm currently installing Dead Space onto my Xbox 360 as I type this. Will definitely start on it tonight barring any unforeseen real life crap.
