I actually adored Castlevania 64 back in the day, but I only rented it once or twice and didn't know any better. So this must have been almost 20 years ago and I have yet to try it out again.
Huh, I guess Bayonetta 1 was 2009. Let's just say I've tried to play and beat it twice (PS3 and Wii U) over the years. Unlike DMC, Bayonetta 1 seems to love interrupting you with awful cutscenes after every single main arena battle throughout the levels. Like 5 some times a level and the story/characters seemed lame to me. DMC always did this more sparingly or just at the end and beginning of a mission.
I beat Bayonetta 2 and enjoyed that one since the pacing was better, but I still didn't love it. Funny enough Kamiya didn't direct 2. The guy is good, but I think Hideaki Itsuno (DMC3-5) and Mikami are better directors/designers. And Bayo doesn't hold a candle to Ninja Gaiden Xbox.
It doesn't help that I have some local friends who latch onto Bayonetta so hard yet are allergic to playing DMC for some reason. But that's typical with friends who struggle to even go back one generation or so.
If DMC fits the horror month, I'd say Onimusha does as well. Dips a bit into demons/mythology and such.

Closest thing to DMC I've beaten would be Otogi: Myth of Demons. Otogi was pretty good, I need to get around to its sequel.

Oh, yeah, both Onimusha and DMC fit. Especially DMC, since when it came out, it was the closest thing we'd seen to a 3D Castlevania that was, you know, really good.
(I do have a soft spot for Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. It's a little janky (and that platforming quite slippery), but there are some solid ideas there as well.)

I would wager I played the first release though since I think it was early in the N64's life time. For some reason I think of Quest 64 around that time frame too. That game was something else...
I liked everything about Otogi except for playing it haha. I think I rage quit on some boss after awhile and hated the camera. The controls were super floaty and weird too. I own 2 but haven't tried it, maybe it refines things. It might be better to NOT approach Otogi as a character action game though. They seem a little different...

Yeah, a lot of people missed the sequel/revised version. In a lot of ways, it was a more polished version, or what the game should have been to start with. It was a patched version that Konami charged for again! If you remember the werewolf dude, then it's Legacy. If you start with yon whip-wielder, then it's the original.

In Dead Space last night, I finished Chapter 7 and saved at the beginning of Chapter 8. Chapter 8 follows the same formula as the preceding chapters; I must step off the tram and go repair something in the ship, while fighting necromorphs. This time its the Comms Array that's offline. I'm currently 3/4ths of the way through the 12 Chapters. I've got 7 hours 40 minutes on the clock at present. I find Dead Space to be fairly entertaining, but its overtly formulaic mission design has grown stale at this point. I really hope the last few Chapters throw some curve balls in the mission designs and locations. And perhaps even expand on the threadbare plot that's hardly evolved since Chapter 1.

I haven't played anything the past few nights for this theme, but I need to. Since @tsumuri brought up Van Helsing, that's actually tempting. Especially since it's not a terribly long game; it's probably even shorter than DMC, and I don't think it's as challenging, either.
Also on my radar, but a longer game, is Laplace's Demon. It looks interesting, at any rate, and Gideon Zhi spruced up the hacking for the game, so it looks much, much better than the original release. I appreciate that he's willing to go back to some of his older patches and bring them up to snuff with his newer stuff. Now if he'd stop doing all that Super Robot Wars stuff...
(Not that I'm going to complain, he gives us free stuff of his on volition; it's his hacking skills, and he can use 'em for what he wants. Just... don't care much for SRW.)

Sarge I feel ya on not playing as much as you might have intended. I'm behind on what I was hoping to play for this theme myself. I'm still hoping to finish at least three games for the horror side, and sample two more games on horrorble side. My normal gaming time has been a little diminished this month, due to reading horror related books instead. (I read this, and this, now I'm reading this, and I'm reading this next.)

Hey, as long as you're getting something in! I went on that quick retro kick, but have been watching more stuff instead. Plus I spent that time setting up Sword of Etheria and ChainDive. The latter does work in PCSX2, so I don't know why HDLDump isn't playing nice with it. Normally the GUI picks up on the game title and startup ID, but not this ISO. I can add it manually, but it doesn't boot. Oh, and another episode of Star Trek: TNG.

Bit surprised at the Cold Fear prices, looking like $20+ for the Xbox and PS2 versions. It's $10 on Steam but eh, that generation can be really wonky on PC...
