Speaking of intimidating, I've always let the Second Quest in Zelda scare me. I really should beat it one of these days.
I got really good at taking out those Ironknuckles. It's easier if you're in a spot with an overhang, because you can be less precise with your jumping slashes. I've gotten to where I'll take them on anywhere, though, and just be really precise with my movements. The only exception to that is that I typically get well clear of the blue ones. They suck. What sucks more is the blasted jumping bird enemies in the Great Palace. In their case, they elicit a response of "run, run, run, RUN!"
So that bit would definitely count as intimidating.

Moulinoski If you ever decide to watch The Simpsons, only seasons 3 to 5 are really essential. The first two were pretty rough, and then it gradually turned to shit after that. And it's not like you need to worry about continuity.

A lot of NES game intimidated me as a kid. It is hard to explain, but something about the graphics most of all, and maybe the sound as well. Not in a "bad" way, but in the sense that a lot of them looked like H.R. Giger designed the levels and enemies haha.
I have a whole story about Monster Party and what it means to me too, one day I should post that.

Zelda II is the definition of a gaming road block. Did anyone here beat that legitimately back in the day without Nintendo Power / guides? I've still not beaten the game (a scarlet letter of shame on my retro gamer coat of arms - someday). However when I was a kid, between the ages of 11-12, I managed to make it all the way to shadow Link without ever using a guide. More a testament to how much free time I had as a kid, more than anything else. I think by the time I got to shadow Link I was tired of Zelda II's shit. I'd probably appreciate the game more now. I have a whole story about Monster Party and what it means to me too, one day I should post that. Please do. A few of us here have at least played through said game.

Haha, that laugh is pretty unsettling, yeah. I definitely had to use a walkthrough to get through some of the more obtuse challenges. I can now go through it blind though; I've played through it a bunch and in both English and Japanese (since there's enough differences to make them somewhat distinct). I love Zelda II!
Edit: Oh, I didn't realize there was another page of posts! I appreciate the tip on Simpsons. I'll see if I can find seasons 3, 4, and 5 somewhere to binge-watch (although I've been making my way through Star Trek, so who knows when I'll get around to it!)

Moulinoski: You know, my next Zelda II run should be through the Japanese version. I've played the US release many, many times. I might actually ( shock! horror!) enjoy it more than the original game.

You definitely should! It's just different enough that it may feel a little new. Some things to watch out for:
1) Level your abilities evenly! If you save and quit and resume your game, all your stats default to your lowest level. In other words, say you end your session and your health is level 4, magic is level 3, and attack is level 2 then you will start with health at level 2, magic at level 2, and attack at level 2!
2) The palaces all have the same color. It's not bugged, it's just like that.
3) You do not need to use the fire spell to kill the dodongos or tektites. In fact, I think the fire spell is pretty much optional... get it anyway, just in case!
4) ... nah, I won't spoil it. You'll definitely get to a certain screen and be like "wait... what?"
