Man, glad you enjoyed it. Sounds like I need to give in and play it next year. I'll probably do it via the PC version, even though I do have the PSX game. I just read this about the PC version...
Saving Your Game: PC and Macintosh versions include unlimited saves at any point in the game.
lmao, wow... I challenge you to refrain and only use the save crystals! (assuming they're still in there).
toei: Weren't you once planning on doing more PS2 gaming sometime?

Xeogred Yeah, but even that doesn't sound tempting right now, unless it's a RPG. I just want to take an extended break from action games.

Definitely mix it up a bit. I get burned out, too. I think that's why I've watched a lot more TV this year, and I'm hoping to do a bit more reading next year as well.
I've got a nearly even split between retro and modern this year, although the hour counts are inflated quite a bit because I finished a lot of long-standing RPGs in my backlog. I'll probably talk more about that in another thread.

I guess this is as good a place as any to review my year in gaming. In all, I beat a total of 108 games, of which 89 were retro titles. I spent 375.15 hours with retro games beaten (not just played, I actually had to finish for it to count in the tally). My modern gaming was slightly above that at 377.15. That's a close split! Ironically, a huge chunk of that was Picross games on my phone, which actually made Android my top platform for the year.
My highest retro platform? It wasn't NES! Nope, it was the SNES, at just over 90 hours. Over half of that was chewed up with Mystic Ark and The 7th Saga, which means I've played a lot of Produce! games this year, once we throw in Brain Lord.
Another theme for this year, and a reason my hour count was so high, was finishing off games I had languishing in the backlog. The retro titles among them were the aforementioned Mystic Ark, Breath of Fire III, Legaia 2, and Fire Emblem. Plus there was the Dragon Quest VII remake contributing on the "new" side. I'm hoping I can continue to knock out some of those older games and get them out of the backlog.
Systems I'm surprised to have put a lot of time in this year? The SMS for sure. I've got a good 31 hours into it because of SMS month, and I greatly appreciated that opportunity. The PS2 also got a lot of time, mainly because of Legaia 2 and Shadow Hearts, both of which felt great to finish.
All in all, a solid year. I'm definitely off of my raw numbers, but there are some long games scattered in there that kept me from doing my usual "short NES action games" kick... not to mention all the beat-'em-ups that padded out my numbers last year.
