Haha, yeah, but I think we were starting on about the same level. I'm admittedly terrible at Tetris, although I'm not against getting a little better.
I think my problem is that I haven't played enough to "see" the shapes (like a friend used to talk about when we played pool), so I can't instinctively put the pieces where I want when the speeds are fast. I have a friend of mine that was also really good at Tetris 2; she consistently whomped me at it.

toei SargeMy 2 cents is you two should pick a puzzle game neither of you have played before to compete with.

I beat the first level (10 stages) of the 1989 GameBoy title Kwirk today. It's a solid little puzzle game, but I don't think I'm gonna stick with Kwirk for the long haul. I'd like something with a bit more pizazz than it offers. Thankfully there's plenty more ROMs in my Retro Puzzle Games directory to try.

Does Dr. Mario do score? I'm a little better at that. I've also done Bust-A-Move, which I really like. I don't know a lot about Puyo Puyo, but it seems not too dissimilar from other color-matchers.

I was going to bring up Dr. Mario but yeah, I forget how it does scoring. I can survive level 20 though and get a little further, usually just have to set speed to slow.

I just tried it on medium. I do better on slow, obviously, but I wanted to roll with the default settings. Here's my first attempt. I lost the shapes the prior levels and managed to just scrape it out, but I think I relaxed too much and just couldn't line 'em up at this point. So, no, I'm not "good" at Dr. Mario.

Sarge Did you play just one game, though? Sometimes with games like that you need a few games just to get into the rhythm. I'll try some Dr. Mario later on.

It was a long session, because the game is level-based. I tend to actually get worse with repeated sessions; I tried Tetris more and did worse than that first run.

Yeah, I forgot how time-consuming Dr. Mario was. There was a stylus-based version included as one of the activities on Brain Age DS that moved quite a bit faster. I like Dr. Mario's basic concept, but when a simple error caused by inattention ruins an hour-and-a-half run, you don't really feel like playing another right away. Anyway, that was my game: My advice does apply to Tetris, though. Unless you have expert-level mastery of the game, sometimes you just start unlucky and fail right away. I always play a few. I think I'll try Puyo Puyo next, since I've never played it.
