BTW, there's a Dragon Warrior III anime with actual Akira Toriyama character designs you might want to check out after. They aired a few episodes dubbed in English in the '80s, and I know some episodes were subbed later, but I'm not sure whether they did the whole thing. Still, it's great to see a Dragon Quest anime in that style - the other ones tend to look very different.
And Pilgrim just sounds weird as a class. Doesn't have the same feel or connotation as either a Cleric or Priest in a fantasy setting.

This anime? I've been wanting to watch it forever but I don't think it's all subbed in English:
Hero - Selfish Cynthia - Warrior - Worldly Maggy - Cleric - Agile Samantha - Mage - Smart
I have these so far: Cheater Guide Tomboy Book Smart Book
So I guess "Selfish" is an Agile personality which is cool with me (Alena? hehe), but it seems like "Selfish" is the worst one. Hopefully the Joke or Brave Books don't take too long to find.
Cynthia's Worldly seems to be Diligent in the GBC version and is a mid tier VIT personality. Seems solid for her now but I'd probably rather this character be pure STR.
Maggy is the weird one and weaker character so far. Also Agile. It has been useful having Heal around so far though, when my Hero still has very low MP and Return/Warp will be useful which costs a bit. Maggy seems like the character I could maybe rotate out though at some point. Or maybe changing her class... would she keep the magic spells she's learned?
Despite the name, it seems like the Smart Book will upgrade to Sharp, the highest INT personality. I'll be using that on Samantha! And I'll probably want to upgrade her to Sage later?
I guess I'll just keep playing and I don't want to overthink it or spend too much time on this stuff. I assume you don't need to ultra min-max here. But it would be ideal to get characters to more proficient personalities along the way before it's too late.

I never even took the personality types into account, and I finished both the SNES and GBC versions. Honestly, don't worry about that stuff. I'll check my sources about the DWIII anime. Last I checked, I think they had subbed everything except maybe the last 2-3 episodes, which is frustrating. But it's more episodic stuff, so you could still watch a few to get the overall feel.

I forgot there are books and such that let you change personality, so yeah, don't sweat it. Definitely not a game that requires min-maxing.

Yeah, I'm not trying to look things up much at all for this one. But I'm surprised to see level ~30 seems like the end game? I know leveling slows naturally. But it looks like HLTB shows this is probably about 30 hours long all around? Not bad.

Probably closer to level 40, I'd say. Although I don't remember how much they rebalanced in this one.

Hmm... not sure if I like switching out my Cleric for a Thief. It's cool how the Thief randomly steals some equipment sometimes. But not having a dedicated healer right now seems like a crutch.

Yeah, could be DQ Expert Sarge talking with those other party setups. I went back to the Cleric pretty quickly.
I'm now level ~10-12 or so and the Cleric is still pretty useless outside of healing, but she has a spear now so she's at least doing decent damage. I guess Speed Up, Sleep, and Surround can be decent though if I have the MP to spare. My Mage on the other hand already has like a dozen options and some handy field spells now like the Hero.
Did another tower dungeon and got the Golden Crown for Romaly from some thieves. Then I did another cave dungeon and got the Ruby Dream to save the sleeping town. Ran into the weird board game thing and tried it once and found a monster arena too. Think I need to go east and get the Magic Key now.
Haven't spotted any Metal Slimes yet...

The only way I'd do a Thief is to swap out the Mage, get all his field skills, then use the Book of Satori (or whatever they call it here) to turn him into a Sage.
