September's theme is "Run 'n' Gun". This is a genre generally associated with humanoid protagonists running across levels shooting baddies constantly. Classic examples would be Contra, Ikari Warriors, Metal Slug, Gunstar Heroes, Turrican, and Alien Soldier, to name just a few.
Further genre clarification from other sources:
Here's some game ideas:

I wish just like Mega Man, that 6 traditional Contra's were made on the NES. Just give me more levels and bosses!
Finally gave Contra Force a look though and... I'll say it's not the slowdown that really bugs me too much, but the screen scrolling seems terrible and inconsistent? It was being really weird making my way through the first level.

Dude, I would absolutely play six (or more) NES-style Contra games.
Contra Force isn't even really a Contra game. And the slowdown was absolutely something that bothered me, considering it bears the Contra name. I don't remember what I scored it, but it wasn't high.
EDIT: Yep, gave it a 4/10.
Oh, by the way, for those that don't know it, Rambo on NES isn't a run-and-gun, it's more a Zelda II-style explore-'em-up. It's so weird... and yet not nearly as bad as its reputation.

Yeouch, yeah I don't think I'll stick with it. Does it use the original TMNT NES engine? With the whole character switching gimmick... yet all their guns seem exactly the same.
I dipped into it some Super C after that and it just feels sublime not only compared to that, but compared to most things on the NES. I'm still not sure which overhead stages I prefer between original Contra and Super C. But I'm still mostly there for those awesome sidescrolling stages.
I still need to hit up Jackal, but looking into it I don't think it would really fit this theme.

I'm not sure if they 100% fit this theme, but I strongly recommend these two NES games to you personally Xeogred : I think you would enjoy them. As far as NES games that definitely fit this theme, you might like these on NES: If you haven't already played them. I can't keep up with who has played what at this point.

I've beaten Power Blade 1-2 and Vice: Project Doom. I definitely endorse these for anyone else who hasn't played them! Great stuff.
I'll checkout Code Name: Viper.

The cover of PB2 is particularly amusing to me: Nova (AKA Captain Saver) just shredded open a wall, and is about to fling his deatherang at a killer enemy droid, whom is also about to shoot at Nova. But then mid-combat, Paul Faris yelled "Everybody stop for a painting!", so both Nova and the droid turn towards the artist, hold hold their weapons in standby, and patiently wait for Paul to paint the scene. I only know the artist's name, because he REALLY wanted everybody to know he painted this silly thing (look closely). Congratulations Paul, someone made a joke at your work's expense twenty eight years later. Edit: Also it bugs me that only the one corner of the B in the logo has spikes on it. None of the other letters do. WHY PAUL? WHY?! MY OCD HATES IT

Well I gotta hand it to Paul, I freaking love that cover too. That's a movie I want made.
I actually don't think I noticed the spikes on the B until now... with how insane his blade boomerang looks in the art, Paul should have spiked the entire BLADE text. It would be all fitting, the second game, double the intensity.
I can definitely see myself revisiting those two games, they were really cool and unique. I played them for another old Club Retro but I forget which one it was.
I'm videogame'd out for the day, but I sampled some Code Name Viper and it seems pretty cool and like quality Capcom. I'll give that one a run soon for sure.

I want to revisit Gunstar Heroes and Contra: Hard Corps, if only briefly. I never really played the Turrican series, so I want to try those and give one of them some dedication.

Code Name Viper is actually a rip-off of Namco's Rolling Thunder. Rumor has it that it was made by the team that ported that game to the NES, and it was sold to Capcom. So it's not a real Capcom game. Arcade Rolling Thunder is several times better than the NES version (or this game), but all versions of it are massively hard. It is Shinobi's precursor, not actually a run-n-gun. But then, Vice isn't one either, in my view. EDIT - Codename is by Arc System Works, before they were known.
