That was kinda my take, too. Perseverance more than anything. (And wearing out your thumb with no auto-fire.) I think most people just get hung up on that massive sprite, which definitely makes the early going tough. Once you start getting powered up, it's not so bad. And maybe I'd feel the same about other shooters as well if I gave them that sort of devotion. I had definitely resolved myself to making a legit run given its somewhat legendary difficulty.

Sarge Oh, you're talking about The Silver Surfer. I should have deleted that part when I quoted you, I was referring to Gate of Thunder. It's not super hard for a shmup. I was trying to say that you really wouldn't need save states for that one, just a bit of perseverance.

Ah, well, this is good to know. Might find a new favorite, in that case.

Kind of a weird list here and there. Another reminder that Gradius Gaiden is the one of those I haven't beaten yet!

I previously linked that list in the OP, but it's good to have it posted locally. I'm not so keen about the order of the list itself, but there's a lot of heavy hitters in there for sure.
I've personally accumulated twenty shmups I plan to test for this theme. I don't plan to finish them all, but I will finish the truly good (or exceedingly interesting) ones. When I was younger I didn't much care for shmups, thinking them too simple and short to hold much value. My opinion on that has changed considerably as I've gotten older. A condensed but intense burst of action gaming holds plenty of value when your free time is limited.

Even with bullet hell, shmups can be meditative in a funny way with how they demand full attention. So it can be a nice genre to take your mind of things for something to razor focus in on.
And this genre can give players a lot of varied mileage depending on tastes and what they might want out of them. If someone wanted to master a game to 1CC it or beat the higher difficulties, that'll probably take a long time. And I don't think anyone is going to cruise through most console shmups on a first run either. But they can be short games when you figure out all the levels and such, so with save states someone could definitely go through a lot of them for the tour experience.
I got some emulators setup on my living room PC which is where I'm gaming more lately.
- Gradius Gaiden - though I double checked, this one is on the PSP Gradius Collection. I'm 90% sure I've beaten all the Gradius games. Not all legit (Gradius 3 arcade is insane), but yeah. Love this series, better than R-Type by far in my book. - Super Aleste / Space Megaforce - I've beaten GG Aleste 1-2 and MUSHA, so I kind of know what to expect. - Genesis shmups
Think that might be my agenda for now.

And yeah, I don't think the order is all that important, just a good resource for identifying really good console shooters.

Played a little Spriggan Powered yesterday. I had already messed with it a while ago. It's not like the other Spriggan games; this one is horizontal, and it was made by Naxat Soft itself rather than Compile. It's neither bad nor great. For some reason I feel compelled to keep playing it, but I'm not very good at it so far - I just never think of using the renewable shield - so I don't know whether I'll stick with to the end.

That's the SNES one, right? Yeah, I'd heard it's not super great.
Isn't Spriggan Mark II also a horizontal shmup?
