I think he's still got that allergy to subtitles. He could have played the original PS2 release at least, it has an English dub. Mark Hamill played Majima. PS2... probably too old for him. 360/PS3 era is old school for him...

He sounds like a typical gamer then.

HRG Denied.
He's still got great tastes though and we agree on a lot. New Vegas is one of his favorite games and if you think I replay games a lot, he like quadruples it. I guess with him not playing retro games much it gives him all the more time to replay stuff. He will do entire franchises back to back annually, it's kind of crazy. When we lived together for a few years I remember walking by his room seeing God of War every year.

Looks like PPSSPP is not nearly as reliable as I thought. I played through the entirety of Gangs of London before realizing there *are* supposed to be bystanders walking the streets. They don't show up at all when you emulate it. The *official* compatibility list is 4 years out of date, the community-maintained list is inaccurate because it's mostly just people reporting that they fired a game up and everything seemed fine. I've seen people walk through buildings, too, which is also an emulation bug, and sometimes people's feet disappear into the ground. Sometimes enemies wouldn't appear on a map until you left and came back, which is also likely an emulation bug because no one else brought it up in the reviews I've consulted. Someone I had to kill disappeared through a wall and ended up off the map, forcing me to restart a mission. None of this was apparent until hours into the game. This makes me worried about playing more games through it. I just hope this particular game happens to have all those unnoticed issues because not enough people cared about it.

The map thing sounds pretty weird and more than a rendering issue.
In DuckStation when I was messing with it and Shadow Tower, a really high resolution (1440p) wouldn't render some of the game correctly. Like even big pillars in a room would completely disappear. Changing the resolution fixed that though.
Guess that's an idea to mess with, but yeah that sounds like more of a real bug if things on a map aren't displaying, or enemies are clipping through objects.

I just hope this particular game happens to have all those unnoticed issues because not enough people cared about it. I think you'll find the more popular a game was, the better it will emulate. As you said, GoL wasn't exactly a big hit on PSP. I've heard of the game before, but you're the only person I know who's played through it. It's got a 52/100 Metacritic score, so clearly the "professional" critics didn't care for GoL either (doesn't mean they were right). I would be surprised if you played through Crisis Core or Peace Walker on PPSSPP and had those kind of bugs. All that said, there's only one game that I've beaten using PPSSPP: I had to use PPSSPP because the English fan patch didn't work on a real PSP at the time. That game emulated perfect as far as I remember, no big bugs. But it's also not a 3D game with an engine's Z-axis that could be affected by unintended high resolution geometry rendering. (What Xeogred described.)

I used native resolution, for what it's worth.
I also had an outright crash in one of the optional mini-games. I just tried Driver '76 just now. Very laggy and clippy (my laptop can't handle it), and it also just crashed suddenly after a while. PPSSPP has a ton of random settings, you can't just trust the default settings to run most games properly like a Duckstation or any other really polished emulator. But even messing with all of those didn't fix the more serious bugs in Gangs (I think using software rendering made people walk on ground rather than below, though - I've seen this happen with a couple games in PSCX2, not sure if it's an AMD issue specifically).

toeiThis PPSSPP compatibility list indicates Driver '76 to be buggy: forums.ppsspp.org/showthread.php?tid=1473And Gangs of London isn't even on the list (too obscure?), but for other games you're interested in: I say give those a shot, see how they run?

That's the old list from 2017. It is listed in the community list somewhere else, with varied reports. A few people claim Perfect, others can't even get past the menu.
I've found that my laptop can't handle more high-tech PSP games, so I doubt it can run those four right. Well, maybe one of the Tenchu games, but Crisis Core would be surprising. I plan to play those someday, though.

Crisis Core has some good texture packs out there. But yeah not sure if that would put more pressure on your system or not. I did get it running and looking pretty nice at least.
