I've wanted to play through that game for forever. It's also on my list as a candidate for this month. I think clearing the first boss and getting to the second is as far as I've gotten. I'll be abusing save states to maintain progress, at a minimum.

I beat Milon legit when I was a kid. No walkthrough or strat guide, didn't have the internet when I was 11. Notice I'm not saying this is a good game. I said it's a hard game. It's a lot darker than it initially appears. I'm not advocating this as a great Hudson Soft game to play, there are many others by the company that are funner. But Milon is really unique, even compared to its sequels.

I don't think it's a bad game either, though - it's just a product of its time. I watched Hungry Goriya's review recently that piqued my interest again.

I thought Neutopia 2 was better than the first, so if you liked that one, I do recommend it. I don't think it's very long, either.

I finished Blender Bros. There are a few good ideas here (I like how you can get "Mini Bros." for different abilities), but it feels a bit underbaked. The levels really don't do a lot to let you really leverage your moveset (although I think one of them would have let me pick up another Mini Bro in a later stage). The stages do try to vary the goals a lot, which I can appreciate, but it feels so brief. I know I play a lot of NES platformers, but this felt like it barely got started and it was already over. Maybe that's down to the aforementioned lack of moveset usage.
Anyway, you can also evolve your Mini Bros. by having them listen to either Rock, Classical, or Reggae music. Sometimes this upgrades them, sometimes it turns them into something else entirely. I don't know if you can revisit stages and pick them up again - there's a trade function that may force a Pokemon-esque system here. There are a few minigames to earn crystals, but I don't really know what those do, and there are a few Sonic CD-style stages that are quite easy to clear.
Oh, and the translation is pretty bad - like a first pass of transliteration. Might be a non-English speaker doing the work, dunno.
I don't want to be too down on the game - I didn't hate it, and I do think it's decent. But what's here just feels way too slight, so I see the gripes back in the day. Probably a good one for kids, at any rate. 6/10.

evolve your Mini Bros. by having them listen to either Rock, Classical, or Reggae music Okay I'll admit that's a new one. I wonder if the idea was inspired by Monster Rancher.

It's a fairly simple system, though - from what I can tell, only one CD works, so it's basically a 1/3 chance you get them to evolve. Unless I missed it with some that have branching paths, but I kinda doubt it. You do have to spend money on the CDs, so it does keep you from just going nuts and evolving all of them.

~48 minutes on Normal with save states
Well this seemed to run fine in TurboEngine after all. Guess I was trying other games that didn't seem to emulate the music correctly (Seirei Senshi Spriggan)
Gate of Thunder is definitely the unofficial sister to Thunder Force, haha. The difficulty isn't too high when you're fully powered up. The aesthetic is mostly mechanical without those bio caves and stuff you get in an R-Type/Gradius, but graphically this game must have pushed the hardware to the limit. So many enemy sprites were detailed and awesomely complex. I liked the sand stage a lot and it felt like they were just showing off at that point with how cool it looked. Frankly this game is probably better than TF3 since it's a little more challenging and seems smoother. Great stuff!

I believe I've played Lords of Thunder awhile back, the Sega CD version. But it's been awhile, before 2016 when I was logging stuff on HLTB.
I switched over to Ootake to sample Neutopia a bit, which does immediately seem better than Golden Axe Warrior like I think Sarge said.
Maybe I'll try Mednafen again... but I have yet to find a multi-system emulator I like much. I guess I've never try too hard to learn them though.
