Interesting picks Ziggy! Are there other good DKC hacks out there? My searches haven't led to much. I haven't seen any, at least not of that caliber. There's one on RHDN that has all new levels, but that sort of thing doesn't interest me much these days. They've become a dime a dozen. I've never come across any completed hacks of DKC3, which always surprised me. One of the things about the game a lot of people seem to hate is Kiddy Kong. But he serves the same function that Donkey would (stat wise, I mean). So, simply replace the Kiddy sprites for Donkey sprites. I guess the ending would have to be hacked, too. But, just cut DK out of the sequence and edit the dialog to remove reference to him as well. The game would become Diddy Kong being kidnapped and Donkey and Dixie going to rescue him. I have no problems with DKC3 the way it is, but I would really enjoy such a hack.

M.I.J.E.T., who fan translated some Genesis titles a few years ago (most notably the action RPG King Colossus and the Phantasy Star 2 Text Adventures), also has a Shinobi 3 hack that allows a No Shuriken mode (along with other smaller changes). I enjoyed playing with that mode in Shadow Dancer, and that's something I look forward to trying when I get around to Shinobi 3. link

Does it elaborate on the ending at all or anything? But yeah, I mentioned it the other thread, once I replay the PC version I'll be playing with that mod. Here's what I would say. Playing the original Kotor 2 felt like a game that was half finished. Playing TSLRCM feels like a game that is 3/4ths finished. It's better, there are things added to the ending that help to contextualize/improve upon what we were given, but the modders only took code that had been released on the discs but not implemented and implemented it, they didn't add anything original (other than some voice acting here and there for lines already written) to try and create a specifically more satisfying conclusion. Last I heard, they're still working on recreating the Droid Planet that was never finished for Kotor 2 as well.

I guess the devs ran out of time while making Sonic the Hedgehog 2 because part of the ending is just some still frames in black and white. Someone was nice enough to make a hack and colorize these still pictures. www.youtube.com/watch?v=a75gm_ovvsYWhat would be really nice is if someone recreated these stills in fullscreen!

Falling back on some Mario today for something simple and fun, getting back to digging more into the SMB3Mix. Definitely very impressed so far. I'm up to World 3 now and each world seems to be themed around a specific game, I think. The first world was mostly Mario 1 stages mixed around, a lot of later tougher levels though. And world 2 was Mario 2 USA which was very impressive because this is a SMB3 hack after all. But it had a lot of vertical scaling sections, Shy Guys, Wart, Mouser, destructible blocks from bombs, etc. There's new music throughout this hack too. The big negative is in the images there... Ghost Houses. Yup, this hack brings in Ghost Houses with multiple exits and I'm just rarely in the mood for this junk thesedays. It's really impressive how they pulled this off though. You can also replay levels now and even go to a "Star Road" from the overworld, to backtrack to other worlds if you want. But the annoying thing about the Ghost Houses is how some of the secret exits block off levels and such, when I'd love to see everything this hack has to offer. I just don't want to bend over backwards to try and figure out the tricks to some of these levels, like world 2's... which lead to a pipe on the map so I have no idea where that might lead. I'm not sure if Luigi or Toad play differently, I'll check them out. You can also save up to 3 files. Not sure if it keeps your lives and items in stock though, I'm using save states since this has been tricky in some spots. A bit tougher than vanilla SMB3 for sure. The star Mushroom above is a checkpoint which is really neat too. Overall this is really cool so far and very well put together.

How's the level design? I always hesitate to try fan projects because they're not always very well designed.

It's great but a lot of the levels so far are straight up recreations of other Mario game levels, which to me is cool to see in SMB3. However I hear this hack even pays homage to some of the 3D games, so that could be interesting. And I know Yoshi is in this, so there's probably a cool SMW-world. It's all top notch man, even like with how you rescue Peach in the first world and then they go off on vacation, which leads into world 2 (SMB2), so even the writing seems witty and fun enough for the little context that's there haha.
I don't play hacks that often at all myself for the same reason, but this is definitely feeling like a professionally made game for the most part. The boss battles being really impressive too, because you have to take them on as you would in SMB2 or whatnot... picking Shy Guys, bombs, or eggs up for those respective fights, which is all something you didn't have in SMB3 originally. So it's really cool to see these ideas from other games mixed in and actually work.

Actually, that makes me feel a little better about it. Recreations of other levels in the SMB3 engine seems really appealing. I'm going to try to remember to check this out.

Up to World 7 now. World 1 - SMB1 World 2 - SMB2 USA World 3 - Some Ghost world, not bad (was worried since I hate most Ghost Houses) World 4 - SMW World 5 - Some desert world, maybe it had some Super Mario Land in there but I'm not sure World 6 - Sunshine, Delfino with oil in place of water that's harder to swim through haha World 7 - Galaxy! Should be very interesting... I think the secret Ghost House exits lead to some bonus world, but I couldn't figure out how to beat the one level there that I had access to. - Yoshi worked pretty well. My theory is that they basically edited Kuribo's Shoe, but Yoshi can still eat enemies for a coin and spit out turtles. He can walk on spikey surfaces like in SMW and does double jump damage. - There's a blue fire power in this, that freezes enemies and then you can kick them. It also has the frog outfit controls while swimming. - They got tons of SMB2 mechanics in here that still impresses me, like in the desert world there was the big downward vertical pipe levels where you have to dig through sand and can do that here. - Each world has unique bosses and they're all pretty cool. Bowser Jr and some gimmick takes the place of the Koopa Kids. - The difficulty is maybe higher than vanilla SMB3, but otherwise not bad at all so it's not one of those annoying hacks. - Not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but there's tons of new music and a bunch of remixes: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHtPDKtqGdF_wOEh744T19wjNeZ4BSOpG
