I started up Metroid Rogue Dawn last night as well and am very impressed so far. The premise is that you're playing as someone employed by the Space Pirates and even see them standing around in the starting ship. This has save slots and a map in the corner, which you can skim around and look at by hitting start. There's even auto recharge stations like in Super. The OST is completely new along with the graphics and everything looks insanely good. Calling this a simple romhack feels like a disservice. It makes me realize how much I love the Metroid engine itself. This game just feels amazing to play. So far, the first area I've been in though is a bit more Super in terms of level design, but that is a little funky with Metroid since it has to pan screens often. There's not a lot of borders either or any hallways, I personally like how claustrophobic Metroid looks and feels, so that's a big difference here and a little odd against my nostalgia. But yeah, I'll keep exploring this one. Seems amazing.

I was going to play Rogue Dawn for Eighties' Ladies' Night, but backed out because it was really legit. What I played was quite impressive.
The official plot setup is pretty good:
"Metroid: Rogue Dawn is an unofficial prequel to the original Metroid game released in 1986. 30 years later, we bring you the events that unfolded before Samus’s famous “zero” mission on planet Zebes.
The original Metroid manual tells us about a deep-space research ship that was attacked. The Space Pirates seized a capsule said to contain a previously unknown life form in a state of suspended animation. Rogue Dawn surrounds these events that led up to the theft of the capsule, which ultimately placed the Metroids under the control of Ridley and the Mother Brain. The mission to acquire the capsule was placed in the hands of one of Ridley’s best-kept secrets: a rogue human agent, trained and manipulated by Ridley from a young age…
Taken as a child from a Galactic Federation colony obliterated by Ridley’s faction, she was initially just another test subject slated to undergo horrific experiments. Ridley decided to instead manipulate and mold her into a weapon, his first human servant and dark agent. Primed yet untested, she is sent out on her own “zero” mission. She will retrieve a newly-discovered biological specimen in the possession of a Federation research crew orbiting planet SR388 and prove her worth.
Her name is Dawn Aran."
If you finish the game and say it's good, I'll definitely play through it as my next "metroidvania".

No legit games allowed for TR? haha The setup is so damn cool. This almost feels like it could have been a real sequel back then, when you look at something like Zelda II and how experimental Nintendo were with some IP's at the time. Did you try AM2R yet? I also stumbled upon this one for Super last night that looks potentially interesting: www.romhacking.net/hacks/659/Very rarely am I in the mood for romhacks like I am right now, so I'm taking advantage of that. To be fair though the last time I really took a deep dive into this stuff was probably a decade ago. Perhaps there's some good authentic releases out there now. I think Metroid romhacks interest me the most, for the simple fact that we only got two official games anyways and the Metroidvania format can be fun if handled correctly. I'll focus on Rogue Down for now but might take a peak at some others.

And no I haven't played through AM2R yet. Did you play through Gimmick! or Trip World yet? If not you are doing it all wrong.

I will second that notion! Especially Gimmick!, such a technical game that really doesn't have much out there like it. I'd probably use a guide if you're shooting for that best ending, though. Or abuse save states, because some can be really, really tricky. Actually, I'm pretty sure you can't game over if you're going for the best ending. I know I ended up using save states, at any rate, because I wanted that ending the first go.

I beat Trip World last year and it was alright. Already talked about it in other posts.

There's a Deadpool rom hack of Ninja Gaiden on NES.
