And I hate to say it, but it seems like far more of a Western AAA thing thesedays. Japan maybe struggled with some of the hardware tech in the PS3/360 days playing "catch up", but now they probably operate a lot better in ways without overshooting budgets, release dates, staffing, etc. I guess Tears of the Kingdom was done last year and they spent an entire year just polishing up the physics and stuff, though I realize not everyone has Nintendo money to take that kind of time. But still, FromSoftware games are pretty good on PC, every single RE Engine Capcom game just freaking works out of the box, etc... Really seems like there's no excuse to me. Just a bunch of publishers completely mismanaging ... everything lately. It is pathetic that we've got ~$70 beta releases. So as always yeah, do your research before buying games at launch nowadays.

bonesnapdeez Ten things to look forward to in the 9th gen:$70 ticket to be on the beta testing team arbitrary digital only, power to the publisher "apology letters" from "sincere developers" remakes, remakes everywhere sequels to games so old we forgot they existed
diversely created, politically thoughtful, experiences games as a service, all day every day graphics that are definitely, absolutely, without question, ~7% better than last gen at least two new indie metroidvanias, maybe three if we're lucky cloud gaming extravaganza
Just a few reasons I'm retiring from game collecting post 8th gen.

Just a few reasons I'm retiring from game collecting post 8th gen. I mean, yeah. I will likely get the next Nintendo system, but I can't see myself buying another Soyny or Micro$oft console (and I haven't since 7th gen). I also can't ever see myself buying another "gaming computer." Most everything I consider worth playing will soon be able to run on a stock PC. I've also largely stopped buying retro games as those have skyrocketed in price. It's a liberating feeling though, being (mostly) "done."

I will likely get the next Nintendo system Well hopefully it'll have more than one 3D Mario. >I can't see myself buying another Soyny or Micro$oft console >I also can't ever see myself buying another gaming computer Agreed. 99% of what's coming to PS5/XSX will also be available on PC (with varying levels of porting competence). And my seven year old laptop can run 95% of every PC game I'm interested in. That's not a joke. The rest I can play on my PS4. Going forward, because I buy new laptops periodically, I will automatically keep up reasonable parity with modern PC gaming. No I don't mean running modern PC games at 300fps at 183403423 x 348292423 resolution, but honestly I don't give a shit about super high levels of fidelity anymore. I just want to play the game and have it run reasonably well at a decent resolution. You can get that with modest PC hardware. So now you know my caveat when I say "tapping out with the 8th gen". I will still occasionally get new games, but they will be on PC 9th gen and onward. If there's some random Nintendo game I just gotta play, well there's always emulation. >It's a liberating feeling though, being (mostly) "done." I understand that. I mean done collecting physical media at least. I look forward to the day I decide I've bought the last PS4/Switch game I'm interested in. If I had as narrow of tastes as most, I'd already be there. But I like a wide variety of genres. I probably won't be "buying" PC games, to be honest. Or dishonest, whatever. I've spent a small fortune in this medium, definitely done my part to support the industry and then some.

Strong Netflix / Reddit / HR department vibes. Could barely finish the trailer. I can't critique this further without violating the no politics rule.
I did enjoy the first three games in the series.

Jesus Chris that's an ugly woman. It's almost impressive that they actually went for such an ugly-ass protagonist in a video game that isn't meant to be comical and isn't about Golum, though I guess that's been the trend in various media for a couple years now, because it's supposed to be "realistic" (good looking people do not exist, apparently). Well, most people who make games aren't super good looking, so maybe they're just basing that idea on the staff around the office. I bet she's physically stronger and more masculine than all the guys, too. The narrator looks like a modern-day nerd. Actually reminds me of a specific youtuber a little. Never played a Fable game, couldn't care less. My hot take: most Euro games always sucked, they just suck differently now.

I'm not going to watch that trailer in its entirety, but if the game takes place in a medieval setting, the "vegetable enthusiast"'s glasses should have a medieval aesthetic to them. They look like modern glasses. It clashes.
There's been a fairly recent movement in western AA/AAA games to diminish attractive women, and replace them with "average" looking women yet with superlative strength and combat ability. The reason for this is political, and for me to expound further would require breaking my own rule about not discussing politics on HRG. I think you all know what's up. Thankfully Japanese developers don't mind creating attractive females in their games, and they tend to get my money while crap like the above trailer never does.

I actually forgot they were British games. "Western gaming" just seems to be a big, crappy slurry these days. BioWare is Canadian and Ubisoft is French? Whatever -- it's all globalized, homogenized.
First three Fable games had fun fantasy worlds to mess around in and they had brevity on their side -- much appreciated in the 6th and 7th gen! I even double-dipped with the first game, grabbing the "Lost Chapters" edition after the original (the PC version is the final PC game I can recall getting that comes with multiple [4] CD-ROMs for install... I don't miss that!)...
There was some shitty looking Xbox 360 spin-off that required the Kinect sensor. I already bought enough Wii hardware, thank you very much -- no way was I ever going to partake in Sony and Microsoft's late to the party motion control slop.
Anyway, I prefer art that is truthful and beautiful, not that which is "subversive" and ugly.

Weirdly enough this character came up as a discussion at lunch with my work friend... he gave me a lot of context around it. Let's just say it's the dreaded "self insert staffer" situation. And said person might be why Playground studios split recently, etc...
But yes it's a weird and deeper issue stemming from current Western trends and forcing companies to comply. Even Koei and Square apparently have some new ethics department. But we'll see if Japan are still for profits first and if this stuff interferes with that, cut the crap out immediately. All one needs to do is glance over how hard modern Disney movies are bombing for these various reasons in the last few years.
No I don't need some Double F chick in a leotard or the days of the corny E3 Booth Babes to be around everywhere, but things have gone far too extreme to the other side. lol, and it should go both ways... I'm never going to look like Dwayne The Rock Johnson. And who cares. Entertainment should be fantasy and just fun.
Even look at the main character in the Horizon Zero Dawn games. They made her uglier in the sequel intentionally. Then there's the Last of Us II...
Anyways yeah sorry I'm towing the line there way too much. So that's my rant and I'll bite my tongue.
I liked Fable 2, but that was enough of these games for me. Not an IP I need to stick with.
